How to read a birth chart for love, step by step
To read your birth chart for love, look at seven things in order: Venus (how you love and what you find beautiful), Mars (how you pursue and what you desire), the Moon (what you need to feel safe), the 5th house (romance and dating), the 7th house and its sign, the Descendant (the partner you're drawn to), the 8th house (intimacy and trust), and finally the aspects that tie them together. Read each as planet + sign + house, then put them in one paragraph.
This guide is about your own chart. Reading two charts together (synastry) comes after, and we link to it at the end. To follow along, get your free birth chart; it lists every planet's sign and house, which is all you need.
The seven love points, and the order to read them
| # | Point | What it says about love | Needs birth time? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Venus | How you show affection, what attracts you, what you value in a partner | Sign: no. House: yes |
| 2 | Mars | How you go after what you want, desire, how you handle conflict | Sign: no. House: yes |
| 3 | Moon | What you need to feel safe and cared for; how you are in a long relationship | Sign: usually not. House: yes |
| 4 | 5th house | Dating, romance, flirting, fun | Yes |
| 5 | 7th house and Descendant | Commitment, the kind of partner you choose, marriage | Yes |
| 6 | 8th house | Intimacy, trust, sharing a life and money | Yes |
| 7 | Aspects to Venus, Mars and the Moon | What helps or complicates each of the above | Mostly no |
Start with Venus because it's the planet astrology most ties to love, and because you can read it even without a birth time. Leave the houses for after: they add the "where", but they're only as good as your birth time. If you've never read a chart before, the basics are in how to read a birth chart.
Step 1: Read your Venus sign
Your Venus sign is your style of love: what you find attractive, how you show you care, and what makes you feel loved.
| Venus in | Loves through | Drawn to | Needs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Chasing, honesty, energy | Confidence and directness | Excitement; not being bored |
| Taurus | Touch, food, loyalty | Calm, steady, sensual people | Time and reliability |
| Gemini | Talk, wit, messages | Clever, curious people | Conversation and variety |
| Cancer | Care, home, looking after | Warm, protective people | Emotional safety |
| Leo | Big gestures, praise, play | Bright, generous people | To be admired and chosen |
| Virgo | Helping, small practical acts | Capable, thoughtful people | To be useful and appreciated |
| Libra | Fairness, charm, partnership | Graceful, balanced people | Harmony and an equal partner |
| Scorpio | Depth, loyalty, intensity | Magnetic, private people | Total trust |
| Sagittarius | Adventure, humour, freedom | Open-minded, adventurous people | Room to roam |
| Capricorn | Commitment, effort, plans | Mature, ambitious people | Something built to last |
| Aquarius | Friendship, ideas, space | Original, independent people | Freedom within closeness |
| Pisces | Devotion, romance, empathy | Gentle, creative, soulful people | A dreamy, deep bond |
Each sign has its own page with more detail: start from the signs pages (Venus in Aries through Venus in Pisces).
Step 2: Read your Venus house
The house shows where love tends to show up, or where you meet the people you fall for.
| Venus in the | Love tends to come through |
|---|---|
| 1st house | Your own charm; people are drawn to you first |
| 2nd house | Comfort, gifts, shared tastes; love and money linked |
| 3rd house | Talking, messages, the neighbourhood, classes |
| 4th house | Home and family; love that feels like family |
| 5th house | Dating, fun, creative scenes; a romantic streak |
| 6th house | Work and daily routine; meeting people through your job |
| 7th house | Partnership itself; a strong pull toward commitment |
| 8th house | Deep, intense bonds; love tied up with trust and sharing |
| 9th house | Travel, study, faith; partners from far away or other cultures |
| 10th house | Career and public life; partners met through work or status |
| 11th house | Friends and groups; love that starts as friendship |
| 12th house | Private or hidden love; quiet, behind-the-scenes bonds |
Step 3: Read your Mars
Venus is what you're drawn to; Mars is how you act on it. It shows how you flirt and pursue, what turns you on, and how you fight.
- Fire Mars (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius): direct, fast, makes the first move, cools off if there's no spark.
- Earth Mars (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn): slow and steady, shows desire through effort, wants it to be real.
- Air Mars (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius): flirts with words, needs mental spark, avoids heavy fights or argues with logic.
- Water Mars (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces): indirect, led by feeling, intense once committed; may sulk instead of fight.
When Venus and Mars are in the same element, what you want and how you go after it agree. When they clash (Venus in Cancer wanting safety, Mars in Sagittarius wanting freedom), people often notice a pull between two kinds of partner.
Step 4: Read your Moon
Venus governs attraction; the Moon governs whether you feel at home with someone after the spark fades. In long relationships, many astrologers weigh the Moon as heavily as Venus. Ask: what does my Moon sign need to feel cared for, and does the kind of person my Venus chases give that? The Moon sign guide has all twelve, and Moon in houses covers its house.
Step 5: Read the 5th, 7th and 8th houses
These are the three love houses. Read the sign on each cusp, any planets inside, and where the ruler of that sign sits.
| House | Covers | Questions to ask |
|---|---|---|
| 5th | Romance, dating, crushes, pleasure | How do I flirt and date? What's fun to me? |
| 7th | Commitment, marriage, the partner you choose | What kind of person do I settle down with? What do I project onto partners? |
| 8th | Intimacy, sex, trust, shared money | How deep do I let people in? How do I share a life? |
The sign on your 7th house cusp is your Descendant, and it's always opposite your rising sign. If you're Aries rising, your Descendant is Libra: you may be drawn to calm, diplomatic partners who balance your push. The full rising → Descendant table and what each planet does there are in the 7th house guide; the 8th house guide does the same for intimacy.
Empty love houses are normal. Most charts have at least one of the three empty. Read the house through its ruler instead: if Libra is on your 7th and Venus sits in your 10th, partnership is tied to career and public life. See empty houses.
Step 6: Read the aspects to Venus, Mars and the Moon
An aspect is an angle between two planets. Use orbs of about 6–8 degrees for conjunctions and oppositions, about 6 for squares and trines, and about 4 for sextiles; the closer, the stronger. The aspects guide shows how to work them out.
| Aspect | Common reading in love |
|---|---|
| Venus–Mars conjunction | Desire and affection move together; strong romantic drive |
| Venus–Mars square | Passion with friction; attraction to people who challenge you |
| Venus–Jupiter | Generous, warm, optimistic in love; can over-give |
| Venus–Saturn | Careful or late in love; loyal and serious once committed; fear of rejection |
| Venus–Uranus | Needs freedom and surprise; sudden attractions; unusual relationships |
| Venus–Neptune | Romantic and idealistic; can see partners as they wish them to be |
| Venus–Pluto | All-or-nothing love; intensity; jealousy to watch |
| Moon–Venus | Affectionate, easy to love; feelings and attraction agree |
| Moon–Saturn | Slow to feel safe; needs proof of commitment |
| Mars–Saturn | Holds back desire, or pursues with patience and control |
Hard aspects (squares, oppositions) aren't bad signs for love. They mark where the work is, and many lasting couples have them.
Step 7: Put it in one paragraph
Write one sentence for each point, then read them together:
- "I love through ___" (Venus sign) "and it shows up in ___" (Venus house).
- "I pursue by ___" (Mars sign).
- "To feel safe I need ___" (Moon sign).
- "I date like ___" (5th house sign and planets).
- "I'm drawn to partners who ___" (Descendant and 7th house).
- "I let people in by ___" (8th house).
- "The thing that helps or complicates it is ___" (the tightest aspect to Venus, Mars or the Moon).
Look for repeats. If Venus, the Descendant and the Moon all point to stability, that's your core. If they disagree, the disagreement is the story: what you chase and what you need may be different people.
A worked example
An example chart: Venus in Leo in the 7th house, Mars in Taurus in the 4th, Moon in Capricorn, Aquarius rising (so Leo on the Descendant), Venus square Saturn by 3 degrees.
- Venus in Leo, 7th: loves big and warmly; drawn to bright, generous people; a strong pull toward one committed partner.
- Mars in Taurus, 4th: slow, steady pursuit; desire shown through effort and reliability, most of all at home.
- Moon in Capricorn: needs commitment and someone dependable to feel safe.
- Leo Descendant, with Venus right there: chooses partners with warmth and presence, people who balance this person's more detached Aquarius side. Venus in its own love house repeats the theme, so partnership is central.
- Venus square Saturn: cautious about showing love, afraid of not being enough; serious and loyal once in.
The paragraph: "I'm drawn to warm, confident people and I love generously, but I take my time and need proof it's real. I show love through steady effort and a good home more than words. What I'm learning is to show my warmth before I'm sure it's safe."
When love themes come up: timing
Astrologers watch a few moments for love themes in your own chart:
- Jupiter or Saturn passing your Venus, Descendant or 7th house. Jupiter spends about a year in a sign, Saturn about two and a half years.
- A 5th, 7th or 8th house profection year (ages 4, 16, 28, 40… for the 5th; 6, 18, 30, 42… for the 7th; 7, 19, 31, 43… for the 8th). See profection years.
- Your solar return with Venus or several planets in a love house. See solar return charts.
These describe themes coming up, not events that must happen.
No birth time? What you can still read
You can read your Venus sign, Mars sign, most Moon signs and all the aspects between them, which is steps 1, 3, 4 and 6. You can't read the 5th, 7th and 8th houses, the Descendant, or Venus's house. If you know a rough time of day, that sometimes narrows the rising sign; see rising sign without a birth time.
From your chart to a partner's
Your own chart shows how you love. Whether two people fit is a different question, answered by comparing charts: their Venus to your Mars, their Moon to your Sun, their planets in your 7th house. That's synastry. Start with synastry chart interpretation, then the aspects of attraction and the aspects astrologers look at for marriage. For quick sign pairs, see the compatibility pages.
Mistakes to avoid
- Reading your Sun sign for love. The Sun is identity. Venus, Mars, the Moon and the 7th house say much more about love.
- Reading Venus alone. Venus without the Moon tells you who you'll fall for, not who you'll be happy with.
- Panicking over a hard aspect. A Venus–Saturn square is a pattern to understand, not a sentence to stay single.
- Trusting houses from a guessed birth time. The love houses move with the minute.
- Using a chart to stay in or leave a relationship. Charts can start a useful conversation. Real decisions rest on how the person actually treats you; if you feel unsafe with a partner, reach out to someone you trust or a support line.
Questions
Which planet shows love in a birth chart?
Venus is the main one: what you value and how you show affection. Mars adds desire and pursuit, and the Moon adds emotional needs. Read all three.
Which house is love in a birth chart?
Three houses: the 5th for romance and dating, the 7th for commitment and marriage, and the 8th for intimacy and trust.
How do I know what kind of partner I'll attract?
Read your Descendant (the sign on the 7th house cusp) and any planets in your 7th, then your Venus sign. Together they describe the partner you tend to choose.
Can a birth chart show when I'll meet someone?
Astrologers look at transits and profection years for times when love themes are active, but no chart can name the date you'll meet someone.
Do I need my birth time to read my chart for love?
For Venus, Mars and most Moon signs, no. For the love houses and the Descendant, yes.
What if my 7th house is empty?
That's common and says nothing about whether you'll have a partner. Read the sign on the cusp and where its ruler sits.
