Empty houses in astrology: what they mean in your birth chart

An empty house in astrology is a house with no planets in it. It does not mean that part of life is missing or doomed. Everyone has empty houses, because there are ten planets and twelve houses, and you read an empty house through the sign on its cusp and the planet that rules that sign.

This guide explains why every chart has empty houses, how to read one step by step, what each of the twelve empty houses tends to mean, how transits and yearly cycles switch an empty house on, and the mistakes people make with them. To follow along, get your free birth chart; it works out your rising sign from your exact time and place and draws every planet on your chart wheel, with the rising sign on the left where the 1st house begins.

What is an empty house?

A birth chart is cut into twelve houses, each covering one area of life: self, money, communication, home, pleasure, work and health, partners, shared resources, beliefs, career, friends, and the hidden or private side. A house is "empty" when none of the ten planets astrologers use (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) falls inside it at your birth.

Most astrologers don't count the lunar nodes, Chiron, asteroids or the Part of Fortune when calling a house empty. If one of those sits in an otherwise empty house, it adds a theme, but the house is still read mainly through its ruler.

For a refresher on what each house covers, see what the 12 houses mean.

Why every birth chart has empty houses

The arithmetic makes it certain. Ten planets cannot fill twelve houses, so at least two are always empty. In practice there are usually more, for two reasons:

The result: four, five or six empty houses is ordinary. A chart with only two empty houses is the unusual one. If you counted yours and felt something was wrong, nothing is.

Empty houses in a chartWhat it usually reflects
2–3Planets spread around the wheel; many areas of life get direct attention.
4–6The most common range. A few areas carry most of the focus.
7 or morePlanets bunched in a few houses, often a stellium (three or more planets in one house). Life tends to centre on those few areas.

Does an empty house mean something is missing?

No. This is the most common worry, and astrologers across schools agree it's a misreading. An empty 7th house doesn't mean no marriage. An empty 2nd doesn't mean no money. An empty 5th doesn't mean no children.

A planet in a house is like a strong actor on a stage: it draws attention to that area and colours how you experience it. Without one, the area still runs, it just runs with less inner pressure or drama. Many astrologers describe empty houses as parts of life that feel straightforward, or that you don't think about much until something happens there.

Two things always speak for an empty house: the sign on its cusp, and that sign's ruling planet, wherever it sits in your chart.

How to read an empty house, step by step

  1. Find the sign on the cusp. The cusp is the line where the house begins. Your chart lists it (for example, "7th house: Aries"). The sign tells you the style of that area of life.
  2. Find the ruler of that sign in the table below.
  3. Find where the ruler sits: its sign and its house. The house of the ruler is where the empty house's story gets played out. An empty 7th ruled by a planet in the 10th ties partnership to career.
  4. Look at the ruler's aspects. A ruler with easy aspects (trines, sextiles) tends to make that area flow; one with hard aspects (squares, oppositions) adds friction or effort.
  5. Check transits and the current profection year (both explained below) to see when the empty house gets busy.

Sign rulers: the table you need

Traditional astrology uses the seven visible planets as rulers. Modern astrology added Uranus, Neptune and Pluto as co-rulers of three signs. Read the traditional ruler first; if you use modern rulers, read both.

The four angles are never "silent"

The 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses start at the four angles: the Ascendant, IC, Descendant and Midheaven. These points are always there, even when the house holds no planets, and astrologers treat them as strong. An empty 10th still has a Midheaven, and the Midheaven sign says a lot about career. An empty 1st still has a rising sign, which is one of the three most read parts of any chart (see what a rising sign means and the big three).

A worked example

Take a chart with an empty 2nd house and Virgo on its cusp.

  1. Sign on the cusp: Virgo. Money is handled in a careful, practical, detail-minded way.
  2. Ruler: Mercury.
  3. Where Mercury sits: say in Libra in the 3rd house. The 3rd covers talking and writing, so earning ties to communication: writing, teaching, sales, anything with words.
  4. Mercury's aspects: say a trine to Jupiter. That reads as a smooth, growing link between words and income.

Put together: money isn't a source of worry in this chart, and it tends to come through careful work with words. That reading came entirely from an "empty" house.

When does an empty house become active?

Empty houses don't stay quiet for life. Moving planets pass through every house, and astrologers read those passages as times when that area wakes up.

Moving planetTime in each sign (about)How often it crosses each houseWhat it tends to bring
Moon2.5 daysEvery monthA day or two of mood and focus
Sun1 monthEvery yearA month of attention to that area
Jupiter1 yearAbout every 12 yearsGrowth, chances, more of that area
Saturn2.5 yearsAbout every 29 yearsTests, structure, commitments
Uranus, Neptune, Pluto7 to 20+ yearsOnce or never in a lifetimeSlow, deep change

The planets' times come from their orbits: NASA gives about 11.9 years for Jupiter and about 29.5 for Saturn. When Saturn crosses an empty house you have rarely thought about, it is common for that area to suddenly need attention. Our Saturn return guide covers the best-known of these cycles.

Profection years: one house a year

Hellenistic astrology uses a simpler clock called annual profections. Each year of your life is linked to one house, starting with the 1st house at birth and moving one house per birthday. The ruler of that house's sign becomes the "lord of the year". An empty house gets its turn like any other.

Your ageHouse of the year
0, 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 721st
1, 13, 25, 37, 49, 61, 732nd
2, 14, 26, 38, 50, 62, 743rd
3, 15, 27, 39, 51, 63, 754th
4, 16, 28, 40, 52, 64, 765th
5, 17, 29, 41, 53, 65, 776th
6, 18, 30, 42, 54, 66, 787th
7, 19, 31, 43, 55, 67, 798th
8, 20, 32, 44, 56, 68, 809th
9, 21, 33, 45, 57, 69, 8110th
10, 22, 34, 46, 58, 70, 8211th
11, 23, 35, 47, 59, 71, 8312th

Profections are traditionally counted by whole-sign houses, so the year's house is the sign that many houses on from your rising sign.

Why a house can be empty on one site and full on another

House systems cut the chart differently. Placidus, the most common in Western astrology and the one our chart uses, makes houses of unequal size based on time. Whole-sign houses make each house exactly one sign. A planet near a cusp can move one house over when you switch systems, so a house that's empty in Placidus can hold a planet in whole-sign, or the other way round.

Two more causes:

Pick one system and stay with it. Our houses guide compares the systems in more detail.

Empty houses and the shape of your chart

Where the empty houses cluster can say as much as any single one. If all the empty houses sit on one side of the chart, your planets are bunched on the other, and astrologers read the emphasis:

Treat these as tilts, not labels. The 7th house guide shows how the 1st–7th axis splits self and other in more depth.

Empty houses and a crowded one go together. The ruler of an empty house often sits in your busiest house; how to find your dominant house shows how to spot it.

Mistakes to avoid with empty houses

Questions

Is it bad to have empty houses in astrology?

No. Every chart has at least two, and four to six is common. Empty houses are read through their cusp sign and ruler.

How many empty houses is normal?

At least two, because there are ten planets and twelve houses. Most people have four to six, since Mercury and Venus stay close to the Sun.

What does an empty 7th house mean?

It does not mean you won't marry. Partnership is described by the Descendant sign and where its ruler sits, plus Venus and the Moon.

What does an empty 10th house mean?

Career still matters; it's just less of an inner pressure. Read the Midheaven sign, its ruler and Saturn.

Do empty houses ever get activated?

Yes. Transiting planets cross every house, Jupiter about once every 12 years and Saturn about once every 29, and each house takes a turn as the house of the year in profections.

Why are my empty houses different on another site?

Usually a different house system or birth time. Placidus and whole-sign houses can put a planet near a cusp in different houses.
