Moon in houses: what your Moon's house means

Your Moon sign says how you feel. Your Moon's house says where those feelings live: the part of life you go to for comfort, the place your moods show first, and the thing you most need to feel safe. A Moon in the 4th house looks for home and family; a Moon in the 10th needs to feel it matters in the world.

The house is the half of your Moon that most people never look at, because it needs your birth time. Below: why the time matters so much here, how to find your Moon's house, a table of all twelve, each one in more detail, how to read it with your Moon sign, and what to do when your birth time is close to a house line. To follow along with your own chart, get your free birth chart; it shows the house of your Moon next to its sign.

Why your Moon's house needs a birth time

The houses are the twelve slices of sky as seen from the place you were born. Because the Earth turns once a day, the whole wheel of houses turns past every planet once a day too. That means the Moon (like every planet) passes through all twelve houses in about 24 hours: roughly two hours per house on average, though houses come in different sizes, so some take less and some more.

Compare that with the Moon's sign. The Moon moves about 12 to 15 degrees along the zodiac a day and changes sign roughly every two and a half days. So two people born on the same day, in the same city, very often share a Moon sign but have their Moons in different houses. A difference of two or three hours in birth time can move your Moon from the 7th house to the 9th.

How to find what house your Moon is in

  1. Get your birth time. Your long-form birth certificate is the best source; a hospital record or a parent's note written that day comes next. "Around dinner time" is a starting point, not an answer.
  2. Make a chart with your time and place. Our free chart uses Placidus houses, the most common system in Western astrology. Any chart site will do, as long as it has your birth city, not just your country.
  3. Find the Moon glyph (☽, a crescent) on the wheel, or in the list of placements. The number of the slice it sits in is its house. Most sites write it out: "Moon in Pisces, 5th house".
  4. Check the degree. If your Moon is within about 3 degrees of a house line, read the next house too. More on that below.

One thing that confuses people: the house is not the same as the sign. A Moon in Cancer can sit in any of the twelve houses. The 4th house is linked with Cancer in astrology's natural order, but your 4th house can hold any sign.

The Moon in each house at a glance

Each Moon house in more detail

Moon in the 1st house

The Moon near your rising sign makes your feelings part of your first impression. People read your mood easily, and you tend to react before you reason. You may look younger or softer than your Sun sign suggests. The task is learning that not every feeling needs to be acted on at once.

Moon in the 2nd house

Security is concrete: a full fridge, money put aside, a familiar sweater. Your income may rise and fall more than most people's, which is the Moon's changeability showing up in money. You calm down when you know there is enough, so a simple budget does more for your mood than it would for others.

Moon in the 3rd house

Traditional astrology calls the 3rd house the Moon's "joy", the house where it is happiest. You process feelings by talking, texting and writing them out, and you may stay close to a brother or sister or to the street you grew up on. A journal is a natural tool for this placement.

Moon in the 4th house

The Moon is at home here, in the house astrology links with Cancer, the sign it rules. Home and family weigh heavily in your inner life, for good or ill. You may move often looking for the right place, or stay put for decades. A private space that is yours alone matters more than you might admit.

Moon in the 5th house

Your feelings come out through what you make and what you enjoy: music, games, flirting, children, anything that lets you play. You light up when someone enjoys what you've made. When life gets heavy, you need fun on purpose, not as a reward for later.

Moon in the 6th house

You feel best when the day has a shape. Routines, lists, a clean desk and a job done well settle you, and stress tends to show in your body: sleep, stomach, tension. Pets often matter a lot. If physical symptoms keep returning, that is a matter for a doctor, not for a chart.

Moon in the 7th house

Your emotional life runs through other people, above all one close partner. You are good at sensing what someone else needs, and you may feel incomplete alone. The work is keeping your own moods your own. For more on this house, see the 7th house guide.

Moon in the 8th house

Your feelings run deep and private. You want trust that goes all the way down, and small betrayals land hard. Shared money, inheritance and the big life changes of the 8th house can stir you strongly. See the 8th house guide for the house itself.

Moon in the 9th house

You need a sense that life means something. Travel, other cultures, study and faith feed you; being stuck in one place with no horizon drains you. Some people with this Moon feel most at home far from where they were born.

Moon in the 10th house

The Moon at the top of the chart puts your feelings on show. Work and reputation carry a lot of emotional weight, and you may be known for caring work, for working with the public, or for a job tied to home, food or family. You need to feel your work matters, not just that it pays. The career guide covers the 10th house in full.

Moon in the 11th house

Friends are family for you. You feel safest in a circle of people who share your values, and you may give a lot of energy to a group, a club or a cause. The risk is losing your own view in the group's.

Moon in the 12th house

Your feelings are real but often hidden, sometimes from you too. You need time alone to recharge, and you may pick up the moods of a room without meaning to. Sleep, dreams, art and quiet service help. If low moods stay for weeks, talk to a doctor or counsellor: that matters more than any placement.

Why some Moon houses feel stronger

Astrologers group the houses into three kinds. A Moon in an angular house (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) tends to be loud: your feelings drive events and other people notice them. A Moon in a succedent house (2nd, 5th, 8th, 11th) is steadier and tied to what you build and keep. A Moon in a cadent house (3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th) works more through thinking, adjusting and learning, and can feel quieter.

Two more things raise the Moon's volume: being within about 5 degrees of the Ascendant, Descendant, Midheaven or IC (the four angles), and being in a house that holds several other planets. For how to spot the busiest house in your chart, see dominant house in a birth chart.

Reading your Moon sign and house together

The sign is the "how", the house is the "where". Put them in one sentence: "I feel in a [sign] way, and I look for comfort through [house]."

PlacementRead as
Moon in Aries, 4th houseQuick, hot feelings that come out most at home and with family
Moon in Taurus, 10th houseSteady feelings, and a need for a stable, respected place at work
Moon in Gemini, 7th houseFeelings worked out by talking, mainly with a partner
Moon in Scorpio, 12th houseIntense feelings kept very private; strong need to retreat
Moon in Capricorn, 5th houseReserved feelings that come out through a serious hobby or creative work
Moon in Pisces, 2nd houseSoft, open feelings that settle when money and comfort feel safe

When the sign and house seem to pull apart (a private Scorpio Moon in the public 10th house), both are true: the person may hold a visible role while keeping their real feelings close. For how the Moon sits with your other two big signs, see Moon sign vs Sun sign and Moon sign vs rising sign.

The house your Moon rules

The Moon rules the sign Cancer, so whichever house has Cancer on its cusp is linked to your Moon as well. If Cancer is on your 2nd house, for example, your money habits move with your moods; if it's on your 11th, your friendships do. Find the house with Cancer on its line, and read it as the second place your Moon has a say.

If you have a Cancer rising sign, the Moon rules your whole chart. Then the house your Moon sits in becomes one of the most important houses in the chart. See chart ruler astrology.

Aspects: what your Moon is tied to

A planet aspecting the Moon colours the feelings of that house. A few common ones:

The aspects guide explains orbs and how to spot them.

When your birth time is near a house line

Because the Moon crosses a house in about two hours, a birth time rounded to the hour can put it in the wrong one. Signs your Moon might really be in the next house:

In those cases, read both houses and see which one fits your life. Many astrologers also say a planet within a few degrees of the next cusp already acts in the next house.

If you have no birth time at all, you can't know your Moon's house. You can still read your Moon sign (if the Moon didn't change sign that day) and its aspects to the other planets.

A worked example

Take an example chart: Moon in Virgo in the 11th house, Cancer on the 9th house cusp, Moon within 4 degrees of Saturn.

  1. Sign: Virgo feels through fixing and helping; it calms down by being useful.
  2. House: the 11th puts that in friendships and groups. This person is likely the friend who organises, remembers birthdays and runs the group chat.
  3. Aspect: Saturn makes it serious and slow to open up; a few long friendships rather than many light ones.
  4. House the Moon rules: Cancer on the 9th ties moods to study, travel and beliefs; a course or a trip may lift them more than rest would.

Put together: "I feel safest being useful to a small, trusted circle, and I need something to learn or somewhere to go when I feel stuck."

Mistakes people make with the Moon's house

Questions

What house is my Moon in?

You need your birth date, exact time and place. Put them into a chart and look for the crescent glyph; its house number is next to it. Our free chart lists it for you.

Is the Moon's house more important than its sign?

Neither wins on its own. The sign describes the feelings and the house shows where they come up. Most astrologers read the sign first, then the house.

What is the best house for the Moon?

Traditional astrology names the 3rd house as the Moon's joy, and the 4th suits it because of its link with Cancer. Angular houses make it stronger and more visible. No house is bad for it; each has its own comfort.

Can two people born on the same day have different Moon houses?

Yes, and they usually do. The Moon crosses all twelve houses in about a day, so a few hours apart changes the house even when the sign stays the same.

What does the Moon in a partner's house mean?

In synastry, when someone's Moon falls in one of your houses, they feel at home in that part of your life. A partner's Moon in your 4th house, for example, often feels like family. See synastry chart interpretation.

My Moon's house changed when I fixed my birth time. Which is right?

The one made with the most accurate time. If you're unsure of the time, read both and see which describes you; that is also how astrologers begin to rectify a birth time.
