7th house astrology meaning: partners, marriage and the Descendant
The 7th house in astrology is the house of partnership. It covers the one-to-one bonds you choose and commit to: a spouse or long-term partner, a business partner, a close collaborator, and even an open rival. The sign on its cusp, called the Descendant, describes what you look for in other people, and any planets inside it describe how partnership tends to play out for you.
Your 7th house sits directly opposite your rising sign, so you need your birth time and place to know which sign it is in. Below: what the house covers, how to find it, the Descendant sign for each of the twelve rising signs, what each planet means there, how to read an empty 7th house, what partners' planets in your 7th mean, when the house becomes active, and the mistakes people make with it. To read along with your own chart, get your free birth chart; it lists the house of every planet next to its sign.
What the 7th house covers
The first six houses are about you: your body, money, mind, home, pleasure and daily work. The 7th is the first house about someone else. It sits on the western horizon of the chart, where the Sun sets, and from there on the houses turn outward to other people and the wider world.
| Area | What astrologers read here |
|---|---|
| Committed partners | Marriage, long-term relationships, the person you build a life with. Dating and flirting belong more to the 5th house; the 7th is the step where you choose one person. |
| Business partners | Co-founders, agents, clients you work with one to one, anyone you sign a joint agreement with. |
| Contracts and agreements | Promises made between two parties, including legal ones. |
| Open enemies | Traditional astrology's term for rivals you know about: a competitor, the other side in a dispute or lawsuit. Hidden enemies belong to the 12th house. |
| Projection | Modern astrologers add the traits you don't own in yourself and so notice, or chase, in other people. |
| Counsellors and experts | Anyone you meet one to one for advice: a lawyer, a consultant, an astrologer. |
Its natural sign is Libra and its natural ruler is Venus, which is why the house is tied to fairness, balance and give-and-take. It is one of the four angular houses (1st, 4th, 7th and 10th), the ones astrologers treat as strongest. Planets here tend to show clearly in your life, because partners bring them out.
The Descendant: the sign on your 7th house
The Descendant is the point on the western horizon at the minute you were born, exactly opposite your Ascendant (rising sign). In most house systems, including Placidus, the Descendant is the start, or cusp, of the 7th house. So your 7th house sign is always the sign opposite your rising sign.
A common way to put it: the rising sign is how you meet the world, and the Descendant is what you go looking for to balance it. People are often drawn to partners who carry the qualities of their Descendant sign, and sometimes feel those qualities are missing in themselves.
The planet that rules the Descendant sign is the ruler of your 7th house. Where that planet sits in your chart adds a second layer: it shows where in life partnership tends to find you or what it gets mixed up with. Many astrologers give it as much weight as the sign itself.
Your 7th house by rising sign
If you know your rising sign, you know your 7th house sign. Find yours below. The modern ruler is listed where astrologers use one; traditional astrologers use only the first.
| Rising sign | 7th house (Descendant) | 7th house ruler | What you tend to look for in a partner |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Libra | Venus | Calm, tact and fairness; someone who weighs both sides while you act |
| Taurus | Scorpio | Mars (modern: Pluto) | Depth and intensity; a bond that changes you, not a light one |
| Gemini | Sagittarius | Jupiter | Big-picture thinking, honesty and travel; a partner with a philosophy |
| Cancer | Capricorn | Saturn | Steadiness, ambition and structure; someone who takes the long view |
| Leo | Aquarius | Saturn (modern: Uranus) | Independence and an unusual mind; a partner who is also a friend |
| Virgo | Pisces | Jupiter (modern: Neptune) | Gentleness, imagination and compassion; someone who softens your standards |
| Libra | Aries | Mars | Directness and courage; someone who decides while you weigh |
| Scorpio | Taurus | Venus | Loyalty, patience and comfort; a steady, sensual partner |
| Sagittarius | Gemini | Mercury | Wit and conversation; a curious partner who keeps you talking |
| Capricorn | Cancer | Moon | Warmth, care and a sense of home; someone you can soften with |
| Aquarius | Leo | Sun | Warmth, loyalty and presence; a partner who shines and wants to be seen |
| Pisces | Virgo | Mercury | Practical help and clear thinking; someone who sorts the details |
Read the last column as a pull, not a rule. Many people meet partners who match their Sun or Moon more than their Descendant; the 7th house describes the kind of exchange you keep coming back to, not a type you must marry. To check the first column, see what your rising sign means and how it is worked out.
How to find your 7th house
- Get your exact birth time. The Descendant moves through all twelve signs in about a day, roughly one sign every two hours. A birth certificate or hospital record is best; a parent's memory of "around lunch" can put you in the wrong sign.
- Make a chart with your time and place. Our free chart uses Placidus houses, the most common system, and shows each planet's house.
- Find the line on the left-to-right axis. On a chart wheel the horizontal line is the horizon. The left end is the Ascendant; the right end is the Descendant. The slice just above the right end, going counter-clockwise, is the 7th house.
- Note the sign on the cusp and look up its ruler in the table above.
- List any planets in the 7th. Chart tables usually give a house number for each planet.
- Find the ruler's own house. That tells you where partnership connects to the rest of your life (see the table further down).
If you don't know your birth time, you can't know your 7th house for sure. Some sites then use a chart cast for noon or for sunrise; the planets' signs are still right, but the houses are a guess. Our guide to the 12 houses covers what you can still read without a time.
Planets in the 7th house
A planet in your 7th house is an energy you meet through other people, often before you see it in yourself. It can describe the partner you attract, the role you take in partnerships, or both. The sign the planet is in colours it.
| Planet | What it tends to mean in the 7th | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| Sun | Partnership is central to who you are; you grow through a close other and may shine most in a duo. | Losing yourself in a partner's identity, or wanting a partner who outshines you. |
| Moon | You need emotional closeness and a sense of home with a partner; moods rise and fall with the relationship. | Looking to a partner to manage your feelings for you. |
| Mercury | Talk is the glue; you want a partner who is a mind match and may work with a partner on writing, trade or teaching. | Over-analysing the relationship instead of living it. |
| Venus | Venus is at home here: charm, ease with people, a wish for harmony and often attractive partners. | Avoiding conflict until it builds up. |
| Mars | Strong pull to bold, active partners; relationships bring energy and friction in equal parts. | Arguments and competition with the person you love, or meeting your own anger in them. |
| Jupiter | Partners widen your world; often read as generous or helpful partners and luck through agreements. | Expecting too much from one person, or overpromising. |
| Saturn | Commitment is taken seriously; often partners who are older or more serious, or a later, lasting bond. | Fear of rejection, or holding back until it feels "safe enough". |
| Uranus | A need for freedom inside partnership; sudden meetings and unusual arrangements. | Choosing people who can't commit, or leaving when it gets close. |
| Neptune | A wish for a soulmate and deep, spiritual closeness. | Seeing a partner as you wish they were; confusion or self-sacrifice. |
| Pluto | Intense bonds that change you; strong feelings around trust and control. | Power struggles and jealousy, on either side. |
| North Node | Learning to share, cooperate and rely on others is a life theme. | Falling back on doing everything alone (the South Node sits in the 1st). |
Uranus, Neptune and Pluto stay in one sign for years (Uranus about 7, Neptune about 14, Pluto 12 to 31), so whole generations share their sign. Their house, which depends on your birth time, is what makes them personal. For the full picture of the Nodes, see North Node meaning.
Several planets in the 7th (a stellium)
Three or more planets in one house is called a stellium; some astrologers ask for four. A 7th house stellium is read as a life organised around other people: you may do your best work with a partner, think out loud with others, or define phases of life by who you were with. The task astrologers usually give it is to keep a sense of self while staying open.
Empty 7th house: what it means
An empty 7th house does not mean you won't marry or partner. There are ten planets and twelve houses, so every chart has at least two empty houses, and most have four or five. An empty house just means the subject isn't where your planets cluster; the house still works. (For every empty house, not just the 7th, see empty houses in astrology.)
To read an empty 7th, use two things: the sign on the cusp (the table above) and the house its ruler sits in (the table below). Transiting planets also pass through it over the years, and those are the times it tends to get busy.
Where your 7th house ruler sits
Find the ruler of your 7th (from the rising-sign table), then find which house that planet is in. This is one of the most used ways to read partnership, with or without planets in the 7th.
| 7th ruler in | How astrologers read it |
|---|---|
| 1st house | Partners shape how you see yourself; you may attract people who mirror you, or partnership is part of your identity. |
| 2nd house | Partnership tied to money, shared values or security; a partner may bring resources, or you earn through a partner. |
| 3rd house | Meeting partners nearby, through siblings, neighbours, classes or messages; talk is central. |
| 4th house | Partnership tied to home and family; a partner who feels like family, or living and working from home together. |
| 5th house | Romance, play and creativity run through partnership; a partner may come from fun, dating or a creative project. |
| 6th house | Meeting partners through daily work or health routines; a relationship that needs care and practical effort. |
| 7th house | The ruler at home: partnership is a strong, direct theme and the sign's qualities show clearly in partners. |
| 8th house | Deep, intense bonds; shared money, trust and intimacy are central, and partnership can transform you. (The next house in full: 8th house astrology meaning.) |
| 9th house | Partners from far away, other cultures, travel or study; a partner who widens your beliefs. |
| 10th house | Partnership tied to career and public life; meeting through work or building a public role together. |
| 11th house | Partners from friendships and groups; a partner who is a friend first. |
| 12th house | A private or quiet side to partnership; meeting in retreat, healing or behind-the-scenes places, and learning to see a partner clearly. |
Then look at the ruler's sign and any aspects it makes. A 7th ruler in close contact with Venus, the Moon or your Sun is usually read as partnership being a bigger theme still.
The 1st–7th house axis: you and the other
Opposite houses are read as pairs. The 1st house is "me": how I act, look and start. The 7th is "you": what I meet in others. Planets across this axis show the pull between independence and togetherness.
- Planets in the 1st, none in the 7th: a strong, self-led person who may need to learn to share decisions.
- Planets in the 7th, none in the 1st: someone who comes alive in company and may need to learn to act alone.
- Planets in both: the balance is a live question, and partners often bring out traits you had pushed away.
The Ascendant and Descendant always have the same degree in opposite signs, so a planet near one is also in tension with the other. A planet within a few degrees of the Descendant is usually read as very strong in partnership matters.
The 7th house in synastry: a partner's planets in your 7th
In synastry (comparing two charts) you place one person's planets in the other's houses. These are called house overlays. When someone's planets fall in your 7th house, you tend to see them as partner material: the house is literally where your chart keeps "the other".
- Their Sun or Moon in your 7th: one of the overlays most often linked with long-term relationships; you feel they belong beside you.
- Their Venus in your 7th: affection and ease; you enjoy being a pair.
- Their Mars in your 7th: attraction and energy, with some sparring.
- Their Saturn in your 7th: a serious, committed tone; it can feel like duty as well as stability.
Overlays work both ways: always check where your planets fall in their chart too. The full method, including orbs and aspects, is in how to read two charts together, and the contacts most linked to marriage are in synastry aspects for marriage.
When the 7th house is active: timing
Astrologers watch for periods when the 7th house is lit up. These are times when partnerships tend to start, change or need attention. None of them guarantees a wedding or a breakup; they describe a focus.
| Timing tool | How long it lasts | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Jupiter through your 7th | About 1 year, every 12 years | Read as a time when partners and agreements grow or new ones open. |
| Saturn through your 7th | About 2½ years, every 29½ years | Read as a time to commit, restructure or end partnerships that don't hold. |
| Saturn or Jupiter crossing the Descendant | Weeks to months | The entry point of the house; often the strongest moment of the transit. |
| Eclipses in your 1st–7th axis | About 18 months per pair of signs | Read as a period of change in how you balance yourself and others. |
| 7th house profection year | The year you are 6, 18, 30, 42, 54, 66, 78 | Annual profections move one house per year of life; at these ages the 7th and its ruler lead the year. |
Saturn's 2½ years in the 7th can overlap with your Saturn return around 27 to 30 if Saturn sits in your 7th at birth, which is one reason late-twenties relationship decisions get so much attention in astrology.
The 7th house in Vedic astrology
In Vedic (Jyotish) astrology the 7th house is called Kalatra or Jaya bhava, and it is the main house read for marriage and spouse. Vedic charts use the sidereal zodiac, which today sits about 24° behind the tropical one used in Western astrology, and usually whole-sign houses. So your Vedic 7th house sign can differ from your Western one. Neither result is "the real one"; they are two systems, and you should compare readings only within the same system.
A worked example
Take a made-up chart: Cancer rising, so the 7th house is Capricorn and its ruler is Saturn. Saturn sits in the 10th house in Aries. Venus is in the 7th house, in Capricorn.
- Descendant in Capricorn: a pull toward steady, ambitious partners who take the long view, balancing a Cancer rising's soft, protective first impression.
- Ruler Saturn in the 10th: partnership linked to career and public life; perhaps meeting through work, or a partner whose standing matters.
- Saturn in Aries: impatience inside commitment; this person may want to build fast and then feel held back.
- Venus in the 7th in Capricorn: warmth shown through loyalty and effort rather than words; love that grows slowly and lasts.
Put together: a person who wants a serious, lasting partner, likely meets them through work, and has to learn that commitment can move at its own pace. That is how a reading builds from three facts in the 7th house.
Mistakes to avoid with the 7th house
- Reading it without a birth time. A time off by an hour or two can move the Descendant a whole sign. If your time is a guess, treat the 7th house sign as a guess too.
- Treating an empty 7th as no partnership. It is normal. Read the ruler.
- Reading only the 7th for love. Venus, Mars, the Moon, the 5th house (romance) and the 8th (intimacy) all matter. The 7th is about commitment and partnership, one part of the story.
- Expecting your partner to "be" your Descendant sign. The Descendant describes qualities you meet and seek, which may show in their Moon, their rising sign or simply in how they act.
- Mixing house systems. Whole-sign and Placidus can give a different 7th house sign or move a planet from the 6th to the 7th. Pick one system and stick to it. Our houses guide explains the systems.
- Reading a hard transit as a prediction. Saturn in your 7th is read as a test of partnerships, not a sentence. Big relationship decisions deserve real conversations, and help from a counsellor when things are hard.
Questions
What does the 7th house mean in astrology?
It is the house of partnership: marriage, long-term partners, business partners, contracts and open rivals. The sign on its cusp, the Descendant, describes what you look for in others.
What is my 7th house sign?
It is the sign opposite your rising sign. Aries rising has a Libra 7th, Taurus rising a Scorpio 7th, and so on (see the table above). You need your birth time to know it.
Is the 7th house the house of marriage?
Yes, traditionally the 7th is read for marriage and committed partnership. Astrologers also look at Venus, the Moon and the 7th house ruler. It describes themes, not whether or when you will marry.
What if I have no planets in my 7th house?
That is common and doesn't mean no partner. Read the sign on the cusp and where its ruler sits; partnership themes then come through that planet and through transits.
What is the difference between the 5th and 7th house?
The 5th covers romance, dating, fun and creativity; the 7th covers commitment and partnership. A crush is 5th house; a shared lease or a marriage is 7th.
Which planet is good in the 7th house?
Venus and Jupiter are traditionally seen as the easiest there. No planet is bad: Saturn tends to mean later or more serious bonds, Mars more friction and drive.
