Solar return chart meaning: how to read your birthday chart

A solar return chart is a chart cast for the exact moment the Sun comes back to the degree and minute it was at when you were born. That happens once a year, on or within a day of your birthday, and astrologers read the chart as a forecast of the themes of the year from that birthday to the next. You read it next to your birth chart, never on its own.

Your birth chart is fixed; the solar return changes every year, because the planets and the angles are in new places each time the Sun comes home. Below: why the date can shift, where the chart should be cast, the order to read it in, the solar return Ascendant for each sign, the Sun and Moon by house in tables, planets on the angles, how it fits with profection years, and a worked example. You'll need your birth chart to compare: get your free birth chart if you don't have it.

What a solar return is

The Sun takes about 365.24 days to go once round the zodiac. A calendar year is 365 or 366 days, so the Sun reaches your birth degree at a slightly different clock time each year, roughly six hours later than the year before, pulled back by a day every leap year. That is why your solar return can fall the day before your birthday, on it, or the day after, and why astrologers cast it for the exact minute, not midnight.

The practice goes back at least to medieval Persian and Arabic astrologers, who called these "revolutions of the years of nativities". Abu Ma'shar wrote a whole book on them in the 9th century. Modern astrologers still use them as one of the main tools for a year ahead.

What you need to cast one

The birth time matters twice: it fixes your natal Sun's exact degree (the Sun moves about 1° a day, so the error is small), and it fixes your natal houses, which you need to see where the return chart's angles fall in your birth chart. Without a birth time you can still cast a return, but the comparison with natal houses won't hold.

Birthplace or where you are? The location question

The planets' signs in a solar return are the same everywhere on Earth. The Ascendant, Midheaven and houses depend on location, so they change if you're in a different city at the moment of the return.

If you'll be home on your birthday, all three give the same chart. If you're not sure where you'll be, cast it for home and recast once you know.

How to read a solar return chart: an order that works

  1. The solar return Ascendant: its sign, and which house of your birth chart it lands in. The year's tone and where your attention goes.
  2. The Sun's house in the return chart: the main area of life for the year.
  3. The Moon: its sign and house: what you need emotionally and where your feelings run.
  4. Planets on the angles (within about 5° of the Ascendant, Descendant, MC or IC): the loudest planets of the year.
  5. The ruler of the return Ascendant: its sign, house and aspects. Many astrologers treat it as the year's ruler.
  6. Stelliums and empty areas: where the planets cluster.
  7. Aspects between return planets, and from return planets to your natal planets.
  8. Tie it back to your birth chart. The return can only switch on what the natal chart already promises.

The solar return Ascendant by sign

Return AscendantThe year's tone, as astrologers read it
AriesFast, independent, starting things; impatience and courage.
TaurusSteadier; money, comfort, the body and building something solid.
GeminiBusy, talkative, curious; learning, short trips, many threads.
CancerHome, family, feelings and the past; nesting.
LeoVisibility, creativity, romance; wanting to be seen.
VirgoWork, health, routines; sorting and improving.
LibraPartners and balance; decisions made with others.
ScorpioIntensity, depth, change; shared money and trust.
SagittariusTravel, study, meaning; an urge for more room.
CapricornAmbition and responsibility; a year of hard, lasting work.
AquariusChange, friends, groups, causes; doing it differently.
PiscesSofter, more inward, imaginative; rest, art, compassion; less clarity.

Also note which house of your birth chart the return Ascendant lands in. A return Ascendant in your natal 10th house is read as a year where career sets the tone; in your natal 4th, home. If the return Ascendant is the same sign as your natal rising, many astrologers read it as a year that feels very "you", a reset.

The solar return Sun by house

Sun in the return'sThe main focus of the year
1st houseYou: your body, image, a personal fresh start; being noticed.
2nd houseMoney, earning, possessions, self-worth.
3rd houseLearning, writing, talking, siblings, the neighbourhood, short trips.
4th houseHome, family, parents, moving or renovating; a private year.
5th houseRomance, creativity, children, play, joy.
6th houseWork routines, health, habits, service, co-workers.
7th housePartners, marriage, business partners, contracts.
8th houseShared money, debt, intimacy, endings, transformation.
9th houseTravel, study, beliefs, publishing, law, the bigger picture.
10th houseCareer, reputation, goals, public life.
11th houseFriends, community, networks, hopes for the future.
12th houseRest, retreat, solitude, inner work, finishing a cycle.

Because the return comes about six hours later on the clock each year, the Sun often lands about three houses earlier than the year before (a 10th house Sun one year, a 7th the next, then a 4th), with leap years and travel breaking the pattern. That's one reason astrologers say returns tell a story across years, not just one.

The solar return Moon

The Moon shows what you'll need to feel all right this year and where your moods will be tied up. Its sign gives the emotional tone (a Capricorn Moon is reserved and dutiful, a Leo Moon wants warmth and attention); its house, where it plays out.

Planets on the angles

A planet within about 5° of a return chart's Ascendant, Descendant, Midheaven or IC is read as one of the year's main characters.

Career and relationships in a solar return

Work: look at the return's 10th house sign and any planets in it, the MC's ruler, and where the return MC lands in your birth chart. Planets in the return 6th describe daily work. Love: look at the return's 5th house (romance) and 7th house (partners), Venus's house and aspects, and any planet on the Descendant. For the natal side of each, see what your birth chart says about your career and the 7th house.

Solar returns and profection years

Many astrologers read the solar return together with your profection year. Both run birthday to birthday. The profection names the house theme and the lord of the year; the solar return shows where that lord sits this year. If the lord of your profection year lands on an angle or in the 1st or 10th house of your solar return, it's read as a loud year for that planet. If the return Ascendant falls in the same natal house as your profection, the two agree on the theme.

Precessed or not?

Over a lifetime, the zodiac Western astrology uses slips slowly against the stars (about 1° every 72 years, called precession). Some astrologers correct for this and cast a "precessed" solar return a few minutes to hours later than the standard one, especially later in life. Most free calculators cast the standard, non-precessed return. Both are in use; pick one and stick with it.

A worked example

Say your natal chart has Libra rising, and your 2027 solar return shows:

Read it in order: a Cancer-toned year about care, family and home (Ascendant), with your career as the area that sets that tone (natal 10th). The Sun in the 4th agrees: home and family are the year's centre, which with Jupiter on the IC is read as growth at home: a move, a larger place, family growing. The Moon in Capricorn in the 7th: feelings about a partner are serious and practical, and you may carry responsibility for them. Put together: a year of building a home life, maybe working from home or changing work to suit family, with a partner as a steady, sober presence. That's a story to reflect on, not a promise.

Mistakes people make with solar returns

As with all astrology, read the year as themes for reflection. Solar returns have not been shown to predict events in controlled tests, so don't base health, money or legal decisions on one.

Questions

How long does a solar return chart last?

From the moment of one return to the next: about a year, birthday to birthday.

Why is my solar return not on my birthday?

The Sun's yearly cycle (about 365.24 days) doesn't match the calendar exactly, so it reaches your birth degree at a different time each year, sometimes the day before or after your birthday, especially if you were born near midnight.

What is the most important part of a solar return chart?

Most astrologers start with the return Ascendant and the house it falls in your birth chart, then the Sun's house, the Moon and any planet on an angle.

Should I use my birthplace or where I live?

Most modern astrologers use where you are at the moment of the return. If that's home, it's simple. Some use the birthplace; read both if you're unsure.

Can I read a solar return without a birth time?

You can see which signs the planets are in, but you can't compare the return's angles with your natal houses, and the exact return time is less certain. The planets' signs and aspects still give a rough picture.

Is a solar return the same as a Saturn return?

No. A solar return is every year, when the Sun comes back. A Saturn return is when Saturn comes back, about every 29.5 years.
