Synastry aspects that indicate attraction
The synastry aspects astrologers most often read as attraction are between one person's Venus and the other's Mars, followed by contacts from Mars, Venus or the Sun to the other person's Ascendant, and intense links with Pluto or Uranus. A conjunction is the strongest pull; a trine or sextile is easy chemistry; a square or opposition is strong attraction with friction.
Below: the aspect types and orbs to use, a ranked table of attraction contacts, what each means and who tends to feel what, the house overlays that add heat, how to tell attraction from staying power, and a worked example. What "attraction" means in synastry
Synastry compares two birth charts by laying one person's planets over the other's and noting the angles (aspects) between them. Astrologers separate the contacts that create a pull, the ones that make two people want to be near each other, from the ones that keep a relationship going. This guide is about the first kind. For reading a whole synastry chart in order, see synastry chart interpretation; for the long-term side, see synastry aspects for marriage.
Attraction comes in kinds, and different planets carry each:
| Kind of attraction | Planets astrologers read |
|---|---|
| Physical and sexual | Mars, Venus, Pluto, the Ascendant |
| Romantic, "falling for" | Venus, Neptune, the Moon, the Sun |
| Sudden, electric | Uranus with Venus or Mars |
| Mental, "can't stop talking" | Mercury with Mercury, Venus or the Sun |
| Emotional, "feels like home" | The Moon with the Sun, Venus or the Ascendant |
Aspect types and orbs
An aspect is the angle between two planets measured around the zodiac. The orb is how far off the exact angle it can be and still count. Tighter orbs are felt more strongly. Astrologers vary; these are common working limits for synastry between personal planets.
| Aspect | Angle | Typical orb | How the attraction feels |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conjunction | 0° | Up to about 8° | The strongest: merging, intense, hard to ignore |
| Opposition | 180° | Up to about 8° | Magnetic pull between opposites; push and pull |
| Square | 90° | Up to about 6° | Strong chemistry with friction and tension |
| Trine | 120° | Up to about 6° | Easy, natural ease and liking |
| Sextile | 60° | Up to about 4° | Friendly spark that grows with effort |
An aspect within 1° or 2° is read as one of the loudest notes in the pair. Aspects to the Ascendant need a known birth time for both people.
The main attraction aspects, ranked
Ranked roughly by how often astrologers name them as attraction signatures. "A" and "B" are the two people.
| Contact | What it tends to bring | Best aspects | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| A's Venus – B's Mars | The classic chemistry: desire meets affection | Conjunction, trine, sextile; square and opposition still hot | Squares can mean wanting each other and arguing |
| Mars or Venus on the Ascendant | Strong physical pull; you notice each other first | Conjunction | Needs both birth times |
| A's Venus – B's Pluto | Deep, obsessive attraction; hard to walk away | Conjunction, trine | Jealousy, control; squares and oppositions more so |
| A's Mars – B's Pluto | Intense physical drive and power | Conjunction, trine | Power struggles |
| A's Venus – B's Uranus | Sudden, electric attraction; "out of nowhere" | Conjunction, trine | On-off patterns; the spark can fade as fast |
| A's Sun – B's Mars | Energy and drive; the Mars person is fired up by the Sun person | Conjunction, trine | Competition, short tempers on squares |
| A's Sun – B's Venus | Warm liking and admiration | Conjunction, trine, sextile | Rarely a problem; softer than Venus–Mars |
| A's Moon – B's Venus | Tender, affectionate attraction | Conjunction, trine | Can be cosy more than passionate |
| A's Moon – B's Mars | Emotional and physical stirring | Conjunction, trine | Hurt feelings on squares |
| A's Venus – B's Neptune | Dreamy, romantic, "soulmate" feeling | Conjunction, trine | Seeing the other as you wish they were |
| Mars – Mars | Matching drive; activity together | Trine, sextile, conjunction | Fights on squares |
| Venus – Venus | Shared taste; you like the same things | Conjunction, trine | More friendly than fiery |
| Mercury – Mercury or Venus | Mental attraction; easy talk | Conjunction, trine, sextile | Talk without touch, on its own |
Who feels what
Synastry contacts aren't always felt the same on both sides. Astrologers describe the person whose planet is faster and more personal as feeling the contact one way, and the person whose planet is slower or more powerful as feeling it another way.
- Venus–Mars: the Mars person tends to feel drawn to pursue; the Venus person tends to feel wanted and desired. Both feel the pull.
- Venus or Mars–Pluto: the Venus or Mars person often feels intensely drawn, even overwhelmed; the Pluto person often feels fascinated and possessive.
- Venus–Uranus: the Venus person feels excited and surprised; the Uranus person feels drawn but may also want space.
- Venus–Neptune: the Venus person may feel enchanted; the Neptune person may feel idealised, and either one can blur the facts.
- Planet on the Ascendant: the Ascendant person tends to feel the other's planet strongly, as if it's aimed at them.
Look for double whammies: the same contact both ways, like A's Venus trine B's Mars and B's Venus trine A's Mars. Astrologers read a contact repeated in both directions as much stronger than a single one.
House overlays that add attraction
A house overlay is where one person's planet falls in the other person's houses. It needs the house owner's birth time.
| Their planet in your… | What it tends to mean |
|---|---|
| 1st house | You notice them right away; their planet feels personal to you |
| 5th house | Romance, flirting and fun; the house of dating and pleasure |
| 7th house | You see them as a partner, not just a crush |
| 8th house | Deep physical and emotional intensity; traditional astrology links it to intimacy |
| 12th house | A hidden or secret pull; hard to explain |
Mars or Venus in the other's 5th or 8th house is among the overlays most often named for physical attraction. Our 7th house guide covers partner overlays in more depth.
Attraction vs staying power
Attraction aspects explain why two people are pulled together. They don't, on their own, say whether it lasts. Astrologers often point out that some of the strongest attraction contacts, such as squares from Pluto or Uranus, are also the most unstable.
| Attraction | Staying power |
|---|---|
| Venus–Mars | Sun–Moon |
| Venus/Mars–Pluto | Saturn to Sun, Moon, Venus (easy aspects) |
| Venus–Uranus | Moon–Moon, Moon–Venus |
| Mars on the Ascendant | Planets in each other's 4th and 7th houses |
| Venus–Neptune | Jupiter to Sun, Moon or Venus |
A pair with lots of the left column and none of the right is often described as "great chemistry, hard to live with". The reverse can feel calm and steady but less heated. Most lasting couples, in astrologers' readings, have some of both.
How to check your own pair, step by step
- Get both charts with birth dates, places and, if possible, times.
- List the personal planets for both: Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, and the Ascendant if the time is known.
- Check Venus against Mars both ways. Note the aspect and the orb.
- Check Venus and Mars against the other's Sun, Moon, Ascendant, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.
- Rank by orb. Anything within 2° goes to the top.
- Look for repeats and double whammies.
- Add the house overlays for 1st, 5th, 7th and 8th if you have birth times.
- Then look at staying power before drawing any conclusion.
A worked example
A made-up pair to show the steps (not real people), both with known birth times:
- A's Venus at 12° Leo, B's Mars at 14° Leo: conjunction, 2° orb. Strong physical pull; B wants to pursue, A feels wanted.
- B's Venus at 3° Aries, A's Mars at 6° Sagittarius: trine, 3° orb. The same contact the other way, softer. A double whammy.
- A's Moon at 20° Scorpio, B's Pluto at 22° Scorpio: conjunction, 2°. Deep emotional intensity for A.
- B's Mars falls in A's 8th house: an overlay astrologers link to strong physical attraction.
- B's Saturn square A's Venus: some coolness or delay on A's side; something to work on, not a stop sign.
Read together: a strong, two-way attraction with real intensity, plus a Saturn note that the relationship will need commitment and patience to last.
Mistakes to avoid
- Reading Sun signs alone. Two Sun signs say little about chemistry; Venus and Mars say much more.
- Using huge orbs. At 10° most charts show every contact. Keep personal-planet orbs tight.
- Counting one aspect as proof. Look for the pattern, and the double whammies.
- Reading hard aspects as "no". Squares and oppositions often carry the most heat.
- Using guessed birth times for Ascendant contacts and house overlays.
- Treating attraction as a promise. Chemistry doesn't guarantee kindness, respect or a future; real conversations do more than any chart.
Questions
What is the strongest attraction aspect in synastry?
Most astrologers name Venus conjunct Mars, especially with a tight orb. Mars or Venus conjunct the other's Ascendant, and Venus or Mars with Pluto, are close behind.
What aspects show instant attraction?
Venus or Mars with Uranus (sudden and electric), Mars or Venus on the Ascendant (noticed right away) and tight Venus–Mars conjunctions.
Is Venus square Mars good in synastry?
It's strong attraction with friction: plenty of chemistry, plus more arguments and push-pull than a trine.
What synastry aspects show physical attraction?
Venus–Mars, Mars–Pluto, Mars–Ascendant, Sun–Mars, and Mars or Venus in the other's 5th or 8th house.
Can you have attraction without synastry aspects?
Every pair has some aspects. Attraction can also come through house overlays, Sun or Moon contacts, or simply the people themselves; a chart is only one way of looking at it.
Do I need a birth time for synastry attraction?
Not for planet-to-planet aspects. You need it for Ascendant contacts and house overlays.
