Profection year meaning: what your age says about this year

A profection year is an old astrology timing method that gives each year of your life a theme. At birth you start in your 1st house; each birthday, you move one house forward, so every 12 years you come back to the same house. The house you're in sets the year's focus, and the planet that rules that house's sign becomes your "lord of the year".

It needs only your age and your rising sign, which makes it the simplest timing tool in astrology. Below: the full age table, how to find your profected sign, the lord of the year for each sign, what each of the twelve house years tends to bring, how to read your lord, monthly profections, and a worked example. What a profection year is

"Profection" comes from the Latin profectio, setting out or moving forward. The method is described in Hellenistic astrology texts, including the 2nd-century Anthology of Vettius Valens, and was used through medieval Persian and European astrology. It fell out of use in the 20th century and came back with the revival of traditional astrology from the 1990s on.

The idea: your chart's houses are a clock with twelve hours, and you move one hour per year. The first year of life (birth to your 1st birthday) is a 1st house year. From your 1st to 2nd birthday, a 2nd house year. At 12 you return to the 1st house, at 24 again, and so on. The year runs from birthday to birthday, not January to December.

The age is the one you are now, not the birthday coming up. If you turned 33 last month, you're in a 10th house year until you turn 34. The quick sum: divide your age by 12, take the remainder, add 1. That's your house.

How to find your profected sign

  1. Find your rising sign. It needs your birth time and place. Our free chart gives it.
  2. Find your house year from the table above.
  3. Count signs forward from your rising sign. Your rising sign is the 1st house; the next sign in zodiac order is the 2nd, and so on. The order: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces, then back to Aries.
  4. The sign you land on is your profected sign, and its ruler is your lord of the year.

This counting uses Whole Sign houses, the system the method was built for: each house is one whole sign. If your chart uses Placidus houses (most modern sites do), a house can start partway through a sign, or a sign can be skipped. Most astrologers who use profections count by whole signs anyway, so count signs, not the house lines on your wheel.

Your lord of the year

Profections use the traditional rulers, the seven visible planets. Modern rulers (Uranus, Neptune, Pluto) are usually not used as lords of the year.

Profected signLord of the yearThe year's tone, as astrologers read it
Aries, ScorpioMarsAction, effort, conflict, courage, cutting things away
Taurus, LibraVenusRelationships, pleasure, money, beauty, making peace
Gemini, VirgoMercuryLearning, talk, paperwork, trade, short trips, choices
CancerMoonHome, family, feelings, the body, change and the public
LeoSunVisibility, purpose, recognition, vitality
Sagittarius, PiscesJupiterGrowth, teachers, faith, travel, opportunity
Capricorn, AquariusSaturnResponsibility, structure, limits, long work that lasts

The lord matters as much as the house. Two people in a 7th house year can have very different years if one has Venus as the lord and the other Saturn.

What each house year tends to bring

7th house18, 30, 42, 54Partners, marriage, contracts, open rivals; other people take centre stage.
8th house19, 31, 43, 55Shared money, debt, inheritance, intimacy, loss and renewal.

12th house23, 35, 47, 59Rest, retreat, endings, hidden matters, inner work before the cycle restarts.

Traditional astrology calls the 6th, 8th and 12th the harder houses. In practice these years are often read as quieter or more inward, not as bad years. The 7th house year has its own guide: 7th house astrology meaning.

How to read your lord of the year

  1. Where is it in your birth chart? Its house pulls that area of life into the year too. A 10th house year whose lord sits in your 4th house mixes career with home: working from home, a family business, or a career change that moves you.
  2. How is it placed? Is it in a sign it rules or is strong in (say, Venus in Taurus or Libra), or one where it's weak (Venus in Scorpio or Aries)? Is it well aspected? A comfortable lord is read as an easier year.
  3. Which planets are in the profected house? Planets in that house in your birth chart are said to "switch on" for the year.
  4. Watch the lord's transits. When the lord of the year makes aspects in the sky to your chart, or changes sign, astrologers expect the year's events to cluster around those dates. Transits to the profected house matter more than usual too.

The guide to reading aspects explains how to judge whether a planet is well or poorly aspected.

A worked example

A person with Scorpio rising turns 35.

  1. 35 ÷ 12 = 2, remainder 11. 11 + 1 = 12th house year.
  2. Count from Scorpio: Scorpio 1st, Sagittarius 2nd, Capricorn 3rd, Aquarius 4th, Pisces 5th, Aries 6th, Taurus 7th, Gemini 8th, Cancer 9th, Leo 10th, Virgo 11th, Libra 12th.
  3. Libra is ruled by Venus, so Venus is the lord of the year.
  4. Say their natal Venus is in Virgo in the 11th house. Venus is weak in Virgo by tradition, and the 11th is friends and groups.

A reading: a quieter, inward year (12th house), where relationships and pleasure (Venus) are the thread, and friendships or a group the person belongs to are where it shows. With Venus in Virgo, perhaps a year of looking after others or of refining what they value more than celebrating. At 36 they move into a 1st house year in Scorpio, with Mars as lord: a new start, after the 12th house rest.

Monthly profections

Traditional astrologers also profect months. From your birthday, each month of the year moves one sign on, starting with the profected sign. In the example above, the first month after the 35th birthday is Libra (Venus), the second Scorpio (Mars), the third Sagittarius (Jupiter), and so on. The year's lord stays in charge; the month's lord adds a sub-theme. Some astrologers count months as 30 days, others as the time the Sun takes to cross each sign. It's a finer tool and less agreed on, so learn the yearly one first.

Profections and your solar return

Many astrologers read profections alongside the solar return chart, the chart cast for the moment the Sun returns to its birth position each year. The profection gives the theme and the lord; the solar return shows where that lord sits this year and what is emphasised. If the lord of your profection year lands on an angle of your solar return, astrologers read it as a loud year for that planet's themes. Both run birthday to birthday, so they line up neatly.

Profections and the big cycles

No birth time? A rougher version

Without a birth time you don't know your rising sign, so you can't name the profected sign or the lord. Some astrologers profect from the Sun sign instead, treating the Sun's sign as the 1st house. The house themes by age still apply as a general frame, but the lord of the year is a guess. If you can find your time, the rising sign without a birth time guide lists where to look.

Mistakes people make with profection years

Like all astrology, profections describe themes for reflection. They haven't been shown to predict events in controlled tests, so don't use them to make health, money or legal decisions on their own.

Questions

What profection year am I in?

Divide your current age by 12, take the remainder and add 1: that's your house year. Then count that many signs from your rising sign (counting the rising sign as 1) to find the sign and its ruler.

When does a profection year start?

On your birthday, and it lasts until the next one.

What is the best profection year?

Traditional astrology favours the angular houses (1st, 4th, 7th, 10th) and the 5th, 9th and 11th, especially with Venus or Jupiter as lord. But a year's tone depends on how the lord sits in your own chart.

What is a 10th house profection year?

Ages 9, 21, 33, 45, 57 and 69: a year of focus on career, reputation and public role, with the ruler of the tenth sign from your rising sign in charge. See what your birth chart says about your career.

Do profections work with any house system?

They were built on Whole Sign houses and work most cleanly that way. You can use Placidus, but signs can get skipped, so most practitioners count whole signs.

What is a time lord in astrology?

A planet that rules a period of your life. In profections, the lord of the year is the time lord for one year; other methods, like zodiacal releasing or Vedic dashas, use longer periods.
