How to read a birth chart for love, step by step

To read your birth chart for love, look at seven things in order: Venus (how you love and what you find beautiful), Mars (how you pursue and what you desire), the Moon (what you need to feel safe), the 5th house (romance and dating), the 7th house and its sign, the Descendant (the partner you're drawn to), the 8th house (intimacy and trust), and finally the aspects that tie them together. Read each as planet + sign + house, then put them in one paragraph.

This guide is about your own chart. Reading two charts together (synastry) comes after, and we link to it at the end. To follow along, get your free birth chart; it lists every planet's sign and house, which is all you need.

7Aspects to Venus, Mars and the MoonWhat helps or complicates each of the aboveMostly no

Start with Venus because it's the planet astrology most ties to love, and because you can read it even without a birth time. Leave the houses for after: they add the "where", but they're only as good as your birth time. If you've never read a chart before, the basics are in how to read a birth chart.

Step 1: Read your Venus sign

Your Venus sign is your style of love: what you find attractive, how you show you care, and what makes you feel loved.

Venus inLoves throughDrawn toNeeds
AriesChasing, honesty, energyConfidence and directnessExcitement; not being bored
TaurusTouch, food, loyaltyCalm, steady, sensual peopleTime and reliability
GeminiTalk, wit, messagesClever, curious peopleConversation and variety
CancerCare, home, looking afterWarm, protective peopleEmotional safety
LeoBig gestures, praise, playBright, generous peopleTo be admired and chosen
VirgoHelping, small practical actsCapable, thoughtful peopleTo be useful and appreciated
LibraFairness, charm, partnershipGraceful, balanced peopleHarmony and an equal partner
ScorpioDepth, loyalty, intensityMagnetic, private peopleTotal trust
SagittariusAdventure, humour, freedomOpen-minded, adventurous peopleRoom to roam
CapricornCommitment, effort, plansMature, ambitious peopleSomething built to last
AquariusFriendship, ideas, spaceOriginal, independent peopleFreedom within closeness
PiscesDevotion, romance, empathyGentle, creative, soulful peopleA dreamy, deep bond

Each sign has its own page with more detail: start from the signs pages (Venus in Aries through Venus in Pisces).

Step 2: Read your Venus house

The house shows where love tends to show up, or where you meet the people you fall for.

Venus in theLove tends to come through
1st houseYour own charm; people are drawn to you first
2nd houseComfort, gifts, shared tastes; love and money linked
3rd houseTalking, messages, the neighbourhood, classes
4th houseHome and family; love that feels like family
5th houseDating, fun, creative scenes; a romantic streak
6th houseWork and daily routine; meeting people through your job
7th housePartnership itself; a strong pull toward commitment
8th houseDeep, intense bonds; love tied up with trust and sharing
9th houseTravel, study, faith; partners from far away or other cultures
10th houseCareer and public life; partners met through work or status
11th houseFriends and groups; love that starts as friendship
12th housePrivate or hidden love; quiet, behind-the-scenes bonds

Step 3: Read your Mars

Venus is what you're drawn to; Mars is how you act on it. It shows how you flirt and pursue, what turns you on, and how you fight.

When Venus and Mars are in the same element, what you want and how you go after it agree. When they clash (Venus in Cancer wanting safety, Mars in Sagittarius wanting freedom), people often notice a pull between two kinds of partner.

Step 4: Read your Moon

Venus governs attraction; the Moon governs whether you feel at home with someone after the spark fades. In long relationships, many astrologers weigh the Moon as heavily as Venus. Ask: what does my Moon sign need to feel cared for, and does the kind of person my Venus chases give that? The Moon sign guide has all twelve, and Moon in houses covers its house.

Step 5: Read the 5th, 7th and 8th houses

These are the three love houses. Read the sign on each cusp, any planets inside, and where the ruler of that sign sits.

HouseCoversQuestions to ask
5thRomance, dating, crushes, pleasureHow do I flirt and date? What's fun to me?
7thCommitment, marriage, the partner you chooseWhat kind of person do I settle down with? What do I project onto partners?
8thIntimacy, sex, trust, shared moneyHow deep do I let people in? How do I share a life?

The sign on your 7th house cusp is your Descendant, and it's always opposite your rising sign. If you're Aries rising, your Descendant is Libra: you may be drawn to calm, diplomatic partners who balance your push. The full rising → Descendant table and what each planet does there are in the 7th house guide; the 8th house guide does the same for intimacy.

Empty love houses are normal. Most charts have at least one of the three empty. Read the house through its ruler instead: if Libra is on your 7th and Venus sits in your 10th, partnership is tied to career and public life. See empty houses.

Step 6: Read the aspects to Venus, Mars and the Moon

An aspect is an angle between two planets. Use orbs of about 6–8 degrees for conjunctions and oppositions, about 6 for squares and trines, and about 4 for sextiles; the closer, the stronger. The aspects guide shows how to work them out.

AspectCommon reading in love
Venus–Mars conjunctionDesire and affection move together; strong romantic drive
Venus–Mars squarePassion with friction; attraction to people who challenge you
Venus–JupiterGenerous, warm, optimistic in love; can over-give
Venus–SaturnCareful or late in love; loyal and serious once committed; fear of rejection
Venus–UranusNeeds freedom and surprise; sudden attractions; unusual relationships
Venus–NeptuneRomantic and idealistic; can see partners as they wish them to be
Venus–PlutoAll-or-nothing love; intensity; jealousy to watch
Moon–VenusAffectionate, easy to love; feelings and attraction agree
Moon–SaturnSlow to feel safe; needs proof of commitment
Mars–SaturnHolds back desire, or pursues with patience and control

Hard aspects (squares, oppositions) aren't bad signs for love. They mark where the work is, and many lasting couples have them.

Step 7: Put it in one paragraph

Write one sentence for each point, then read them together:

  1. "I love through ___" (Venus sign) "and it shows up in ___" (Venus house).
  2. "I pursue by ___" (Mars sign).
  3. "To feel safe I need ___" (Moon sign).
  4. "I date like ___" (5th house sign and planets).
  5. "I'm drawn to partners who ___" (Descendant and 7th house).
  6. "I let people in by ___" (8th house).
  7. "The thing that helps or complicates it is ___" (the tightest aspect to Venus, Mars or the Moon).

Look for repeats. If Venus, the Descendant and the Moon all point to stability, that's your core. If they disagree, the disagreement is the story: what you chase and what you need may be different people.

A worked example

An example chart: Venus in Leo in the 7th house, Mars in Taurus in the 4th, Moon in Capricorn, Aquarius rising (so Leo on the Descendant), Venus square Saturn by 3 degrees.

The paragraph: "I'm drawn to warm, confident people and I love generously, but I take my time and need proof it's real. I show love through steady effort and a good home more than words. What I'm learning is to show my warmth before I'm sure it's safe."

When love themes come up: timing

Astrologers watch a few moments for love themes in your own chart:

These describe themes coming up, not events that must happen.

No birth time? What you can still read

You can read your Venus sign, Mars sign, most Moon signs and all the aspects between them, which is steps 1, 3, 4 and 6. You can't read the 5th, 7th and 8th houses, the Descendant, or Venus's house. If you know a rough time of day, that sometimes narrows the rising sign; see rising sign without a birth time.

From your chart to a partner's

Your own chart shows how you love. Whether two people fit is a different question, answered by comparing charts: their Venus to your Mars, their Moon to your Sun, their planets in your 7th house. That's synastry. Start with synastry chart interpretation, then the aspects of attraction and the aspects astrologers look at for marriage. For quick sign pairs, see the compatibility pages.

Mistakes to avoid

Questions

Which planet shows love in a birth chart?

Venus is the main one: what you value and how you show affection. Mars adds desire and pursuit, and the Moon adds emotional needs. Read all three.

Which house is love in a birth chart?

Three houses: the 5th for romance and dating, the 7th for commitment and marriage, and the 8th for intimacy and trust.

How do I know what kind of partner I'll attract?

Read your Descendant (the sign on the 7th house cusp) and any planets in your 7th, then your Venus sign. Together they describe the partner you tend to choose.

Can a birth chart show when I'll meet someone?

Astrologers look at transits and profection years for times when love themes are active, but no chart can name the date you'll meet someone.

Do I need my birth time to read my chart for love?

For Venus, Mars and most Moon signs, no. For the love houses and the Descendant, yes.

What if my 7th house is empty?

That's common and says nothing about whether you'll have a partner. Read the sign on the cusp and where its ruler sits.
