What does my birth chart say about my career?

In astrology, your career is read mainly from the Midheaven (the MC, the top point of your chart) and the 10th house it usually begins. They describe the kind of public role and reputation you grow toward. The 6th house adds your day-to-day work, the 2nd house how you earn, and Saturn and your Sun how you build and what you want to be known for.

Your Sun sign alone says little about work, which is why "best jobs for a Leo" lists feel thin. The career points depend on your birth time, because the Midheaven moves through all twelve signs in a day. Below: the five places to look, how to find them, the Midheaven sign by sign, planets in the 10th house, where your Midheaven's ruler sits, a worked example, and how astrologers time career years. To follow along, get your free birth chart; it lists every planet's sign and house.

The five career points in a birth chart

PointWhat it says about workNeeds birth time?
Midheaven (MC)The role, reputation and direction you grow into; how the public sees you at your best.Yes
10th house and planets in itCareer, status, bosses, achievement; planets here show strongly in public life.Yes
6th houseDaily work, routine, the tasks you do, co-workers, how you serve.Yes
2nd houseEarning, your own money and the skills you can be paid for.Yes
Sun, Saturn and the MC rulerThe Sun: what you want to be recognised for. Saturn: where you build slowly and earn authority. The MC ruler: where in life your career tends to be found.Sun and Saturn no; the ruler's house yes

Some astrologers add Jupiter (where growth and opportunity come easily) and the 11th house (the networks and groups that help a career). Vedic astrology reads the 10th house in its own way, with the 10th lord and the dasha periods; this guide uses Western astrology.

How to find your Midheaven and 10th house

  1. Get your exact birth time. A birth certificate or hospital record is best. The MC moves about 1° every 4 minutes, so a time off by an hour can shift it by a sign.
  2. Make a chart with your date, time and city. Our free chart uses Placidus houses, the most common system.
  3. Find "MC" at the top of the wheel. The sign next to it is your Midheaven sign. In Placidus and most quadrant systems it is also the start of the 10th house.
  4. Note planets in the 10th, 6th and 2nd houses, and the sign on each cusp.
  5. Find your Midheaven's ruler (the table below) and note its house.

A note on house systems: in Whole Sign houses, popular with traditional astrologers, the 10th house is simply the tenth sign from your rising sign, and the MC can fall in the 9th, 10th or 11th. Both are in use; just know which one your chart shows. The houses in astrology guide covers the systems in more detail.

Your Midheaven sign and the work it points to

Read these as styles and settings, not job titles. Any sign can do any job; the MC describes how you tend to want to do it and be seen doing it.

The Midheaven is not always ten signs from your rising sign. Depending on where you were born and the time of year, the MC can be in the 9th, 10th or 11th sign from the Ascendant, and at far northern latitudes the gap stretches further. So check the chart rather than counting.

Planets in the 10th house

A planet in your 10th house tends to show up in your career and reputation, often in a way other people notice before you do.

Planet in the 10thHow it's read for career
SunA strong drive to be recognised; public roles, leadership, wanting your name on the work.
MoonWork tied to care, the public or the home; career moods and changes; often known to many people.
MercuryKnown for ideas, speaking or writing; several roles at once.
VenusLikeability at work; careers in beauty, art, design, diplomacy or people-facing roles.
MarsAmbition and competitiveness; going your own way; conflict with bosses if blocked.
JupiterTraditionally one of the luckiest career placements: growth, mentors, reputation that spreads.
SaturnSlow, earned success; responsibility early; authority that arrives with age.
UranusUnusual paths, sudden changes of direction, work in tech or reform, dislike of hierarchy.
NeptuneCreative, spiritual or caring work; an unclear sense of direction at times; an image others project onto.
PlutoDrive for influence and control; careers that transform, or that go through big rebuilds.

No planets in your 10th house is very common and doesn't mean a quiet career. Read the MC sign and its ruler instead; the empty houses guide explains how.

Where your Midheaven's ruler sits

The planet that rules your MC sign is your career ruler. Its house shows the part of life your work tends to grow out of or blend with.

MC ruler inCareer tends to come through
1st houseYourself: your own name, body, personality; self-employment
2nd houseMoney, resources, your own talents and what you can sell
3rd houseCommunication, local work, siblings, writing, short trips
4th houseHome, family, property; working from home or in a family business
5th houseCreativity, play, children, performance
6th houseCraft, service, health, the daily grind done well
7th housePartners, clients, contracts; work done one to one
8th houseOther people's money, research, crisis, shared resources
9th houseTeaching, travel, publishing, law, beliefs
10th houseCareer itself: a strong, direct focus on public role
11th houseGroups, networks, technology, causes, friends
12th houseBehind the scenes: hospitals, retreats, institutions, private or creative work

The ruler's aspects add detail: a ruler trine Jupiter is read as open doors, square Saturn as delays that make you thorough. The guide to reading birth chart aspects explains each angle.

The 6th house: your daily work

If the MC is the title on the door, the 6th house is the desk. It describes the routine you can stand, the tasks you're good at, the pace, and how you get on with co-workers. A Gemini 6th house wants variety and talk; a Capricorn 6th wants structure and clear standards; Mars in the 6th works hard and fast and may burn out; Neptune in the 6th needs work that feels meaningful or it drifts. Many people who like their title but hate their job have an MC need being met and a 6th house need being ignored.

The 2nd house: how you earn

The 2nd house covers your own money and the skills you can turn into it. Its sign suggests how you like to earn (Taurus steadily, Aries by going after it, Sagittarius through teaching or travel, Pisces through creative or caring work), and planets there show what helps or complicates income. Venus or Jupiter in the 2nd is traditionally read as an easier relationship with money; Saturn as building it slowly and carefully. For money themes beyond earning, astrologers also look at the 8th house (shared money, debt, investments).

Your elements as work styles

Count which element holds most of your planets, especially the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Mars and Saturn.

MostlyWorks bestStruggles with
Fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius)Starting, leading, inspiring, fast-moving rolesLong routine, slow approvals
Earth (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn)Building, managing, making things real and lastingConstant change, vague goals
Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius)Ideas, talk, systems, working with peopleIsolated, purely physical work
Water (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces)Care, intuition, depth, creative and healing workCold, purely numbers-driven settings

A worked example

Take a chart with a Virgo Midheaven, Saturn in the 10th house, Mercury (the MC ruler) in the 7th house in Leo, and a Sagittarius 6th house.

  1. MC in Virgo: wants to be known for skill, precision, being useful.
  2. Saturn in the 10th: recognition comes slowly and is earned; authority later in life; high standards.
  3. Mercury, the ruler, in the 7th in Leo: career comes through clients and partners, with some performance; work done one to one, where they shine in the room.
  4. Sagittarius 6th: daily work needs meaning, learning and some freedom of movement.

Put together: someone suited to expert, client-facing work (a consultant, an editor, a specialist) who builds a name over years, and who needs the day-to-day to keep teaching them something. That is a reading of tendencies, not a job assignment.

When career themes come up: timing

No birth time? What you can still read

Without a time there is no Midheaven and no houses, so most of this guide doesn't apply. You can still read your Sun sign (what you want to be recognised for), Saturn's sign (how you build and where you work hardest), Mars's sign (how you go after goals) and the element balance. If you can find your time, even roughly, the chart opens up; the birth time guide lists where to look.

What a chart can't tell you

A chart describes themes. It doesn't know your training, the job market, your health, your bills or your luck. Controlled studies, including a double-blind test published in Nature in 1985, have not found that astrology predicts personality or outcomes better than chance. Use a career reading as a prompt for reflection: does "known for skill and precision" ring true, and does your current work let you be that? For real decisions, talk to people in the field, a career counsellor, or a free service such as your state's American Job Center.

Questions

What part of your birth chart determines career?

Mainly the Midheaven (MC) and the 10th house, with the 6th house for daily work and the 2nd for earning. The MC's ruling planet and its house add where the career tends to come from.

Is the 10th house the same as the Midheaven?

In Placidus and other quadrant systems, the MC is the 10th house cusp. In Whole Sign houses it can fall in the 9th, 10th or 11th house.

What if my 10th house is empty?

That's very common. Read the sign on the cusp and where its ruler sits; career themes then come through that planet and through timing such as profection years.

Can my birth chart tell me what job to have?

It can suggest styles and settings that astrologers associate with your placements. It can't pick a job for you, and it says nothing about your skills or the market.

What is the best placement for career success?

Traditionally, Jupiter or the Sun in the 10th, or a well-aspected MC ruler. In practice, astrologers read every placement as able to work; Saturn in the 10th, often feared, is linked with long, solid careers.
