Mercury retrograde 2027 dates: all three, with shadows and signs

Mercury is retrograde three times in 2027: February 9 to March 3 (Pisces back into Aquarius), June 10 to July 4 (Cancer back into Gemini) and October 7 to October 28 (Scorpio back into Libra). Counting the shadow weeks before and after, each cycle runs about eight weeks: January 25 to March 23, May 26 to July 19, and September 17 to November 13.

All three start in a water sign and finish in an air sign, so each one crosses a sign line partway through. That matters for your own chart: each retrograde touches two of your houses, not one. Mercury retrograde 2027 at a glance

The retrograde itself lasts 21 to 24 days each time. In total Mercury spends 67 days of 2027 retrograde, a little under one day in five, which is the normal rate: three or four retrogrades a year, every year.

The full schedule with US times

Times are to the minute in UTC from published ephemerides, matched to our own engine's hourly positions; US times are Eastern (EST in February and March, EDT from June to October). Every station lands on the same calendar day across the US.

Different sites can show a station one day apart. That's almost always the time zone: a station late in the evening in New York is already the next day in London or Delhi. Sidereal (Vedic) sites keep the same dates but give positions about 24° earlier, so a Vedic calendar puts the February retrograde in Aquarius and Capricorn.

What Mercury retrograde actually is

Mercury never moves backward. It orbits the Sun every 88 days, much faster than Earth. Three or four times a year it swings between us and the Sun and overtakes Earth on the inside track, and for about three weeks it appears, from here, to slide backward against the stars. NASA describes it the same way: an apparent motion, an optical effect of two planets moving at different speeds.

In astrology, Mercury rules thinking, speaking, writing, short trips, paperwork, contracts, devices and the small daily logistics that hold a week together. A retrograde is read as a time when those things turn back on themselves: plans get revisited, messages get misread or resent, people from the past reappear, and you re-do rather than begin. The tradition is old; the "everything breaks" version is mostly modern internet lore.

The four phases of each cycle

Pre-shadow (about two weeks)

Mercury is still moving forward, but over the stretch of sky it will later walk back over. Astrologers read this as the time the topic first shows up: an email you'll need to revisit, a plan that will get reworked. Note what comes up, so you recognise it when it returns.

Station retrograde (the day it turns)

Mercury slows to a stop. Stations are read as the strongest days of the cycle, and the day before and after count too. If you were going to avoid one day for a big signing, this is it.

Retrograde (21–24 days)

Mercury moves back. Halfway through, it lines up with the Sun (the "inferior conjunction"), which astrologers read as the moment the real point of the cycle becomes clear. In 2027 those dates are February 18, June 23 and October 19.

Post-shadow (about two to three weeks)

Mercury is direct again and re-crosses the same degrees a third time. Things that stalled start moving, decisions made during the retrograde get tested, and by the shadow's end the cycle is finished.

Retrograde 1: February 9 to March 3, Pisces into Aquarius

Shadow January 25 to March 23. Mercury turns at 5° Pisces, backs over the line into Aquarius on February 18, and turns direct at 20° Aquarius on March 3.

The Pisces part (Feb 9–18) is read as foggy, intuitive, easy to misunderstand: vague messages, dreams, things left unsaid, old feelings. The Aquarius part (Feb 18–Mar 3) turns to groups, friends, networks, technology and future plans: group chats, team projects, apps and accounts, a plan for the year that needs a second draft. The Sun meets Mercury on February 18 right on the line between the two signs.

Week by week:

• Jan 25–Feb 8: the shadow. Plans for the year get made; some will need reworking.
• Feb 9–18: retrograde in Pisces. Slow down on anything you'd sign; re-read messages.
• Feb 18–Mar 3: retrograde in Aquarius. Group projects and tech get revisited.
• Mar 3–23: direct, in the shadow. Things restart; finish what you reworked.

Mars is retrograde too until April 1 (in Virgo and then Leo), so the first quarter of 2027 has two planets retrograde at once: astrologers often read that as a slow start to the year for new ventures.

Retrograde 2: June 10 to July 4, Cancer into Gemini

Shadow May 26 to July 19. Mercury turns at 6° Cancer, meets the Sun on June 23, backs into Gemini on June 26 and turns direct at 27° Gemini on Independence Day.

The Cancer part (Jun 10–26) is about home, family and memory: conversations with parents, house paperwork, a move or a repair, old photos and old feelings. The Gemini part (Jun 26–Jul 4) is Mercury in its own sign, so the classic retrograde themes are strongest: messages, siblings, neighbours, short trips, phones and cars. This is the summer-travel retrograde, and it ends on a holiday weekend: build buffer time into July 4 travel and double-check bookings made in late May and June.

• May 26–Jun 9: the shadow. Summer plans and home plans start forming.
• Jun 10–26: retrograde in Cancer. Family talks, home admin, memories.
• Jun 26–Jul 4: retrograde in Gemini. Messages, travel, devices.
• Jul 4–19: direct, in the shadow. Send the revised version.

Retrograde 3: October 7 to October 28, Scorpio into Libra

Shadow September 17 to November 13. Mercury turns at 4° Scorpio, backs into Libra on October 16, meets the Sun on October 19 and turns direct at 19° Libra.

The Scorpio part (Oct 7–16) is read as deep and private: secrets, shared money, debts, taxes, insurance, research, and talks you've been avoiding. The Libra part (Oct 16–28) turns to partners and agreements: contracts, negotiations, a relationship conversation that needs another round, the balance of give and take. It's the shortest of the three (21 days) and the one most often linked to contracts and partnerships.

• Sep 17–Oct 6: the shadow. A deal or a talk with a partner starts.
• Oct 7–16: retrograde in Scorpio. Money, debts, secrets resurface.
• Oct 16–28: retrograde in Libra. Agreements and relationships get a second look.
• Oct 28–Nov 13: direct, in the shadow. Sign the revised terms.

Mercury retrograde 2027 by rising sign

Where a retrograde lands in your own life depends on your rising sign, which sets your houses. With whole sign houses (the quick method: your rising sign is your 1st house, the next sign your 2nd), each 2027 retrograde starts in one house and backs into the one before it. A retrograde hits harder when it touches something in your birth chart: a planet or angle within a couple of degrees of where Mercury stations. In 2027 the sensitive degrees are 5–6° Pisces and 20–21° Aquarius; 6° Cancer and 27° Gemini; 4–5° Scorpio and 19° Libra. If your Sun, Moon, rising sign or Mercury sits near one of them, that retrograde is a personal one for you.

What to do during Mercury retrograde

The traditional advice is about the "re-" words: review, revise, repair, reconnect, return, rest. In practice:

• Back up your phone and computer before each station.
• Re-read anything before you sign it, and keep copies.
• Confirm bookings, addresses and times, especially for June and July travel.
• Finish old projects and edit drafts instead of starting new ones.
• Reconnect with people you've lost touch with; old contacts often reappear anyway.
• Leave buffer time on trips around the stations.

What to avoid (and what not to bother avoiding)

Astrologers who use retrogrades usually say to avoid starting major new things on the station days: launching a business, signing a big contract, buying a car or an expensive device. But life doesn't stop for 67 days a year, and nobody serious says it should. If a contract has to be signed during a retrograde, sign it after reading it carefully, which is good advice any week of the year.

Things there's no need to avoid: going to work, sending email, keeping appointments, dating, travel you've already booked, or medical care. If something important (a health decision, a legal deadline, a money matter) lands in a retrograde, follow your doctor's, lawyer's or adviser's timetable, not the sky's. Astrology is a way of reflecting, not a reason to miss a deadline.

The retrograde happening now (October–November 2026)

Mercury turned retrograde on October 24, 2026 at 20° Scorpio, backs over the stretch it will turn direct at on November 13 (5° Scorpio), and leaves its post-shadow on November 30. That one stays in Scorpio the whole time. The next one is the February 2027 retrograde above, with its shadow starting January 25.

Venus doesn't turn retrograde in 2027; its last retrograde ended November 13, 2026 and the next is in 2028. The outer planets are retrograde for months every year, so they're read as background; Mercury, Venus and Mars retrogrades are the ones people notice.
