Jupiter return meaning: what it brings and when yours happens
A Jupiter return is the moment Jupiter comes back to the exact place it was when you were born. It takes Jupiter 11.86 years to go round the zodiac, so it happens at about ages 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 71 and 83. Astrologers read it as the start of a new twelve-year chapter of growth: a year when doors open, plans get bigger and you decide what you want to expand into next.
It is gentler and better known for luck than the Saturn return, but it isn't automatic good fortune: Jupiter enlarges whatever it touches, including overspending and overcommitting. Below: the exact ages, how to find the dates of your own, who is having one in 2026, 2027 and 2028, what each return tends to bring, how to read yours by house, and what to do with the year. What Jupiter means in astrology
Jupiter is the largest planet and, in astrology, the planet of growth: belief, meaning, study, travel, generosity, teachers, law, luck and opportunity. Traditional astrologers called it the "greater benefic", the planet that helps most. Its weak side is excess: too much, too fast, too sure. Where Jupiter sits in your birth chart (its sign and house) shows where you grow most easily and where you tend to overdo it.
Jupiter return ages: the exact numbers
Jupiter's orbit takes 11.86 years, a little under twelve, so each return comes a few weeks to a couple of months earlier than your birthday that year, and the gap adds up:
| Return | Age | Often read as |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | about 11 years 10 months | The first sense of a world beyond home; school changes, faith, curiosity |
| 2nd | about 23 years 9 months | Leaving home, first career and belief choices, travel and study |
| 3rd | about 35 years 7 months | Taking stock of the 30s; a bigger role, a move, a new direction |
| 4th | about 47 years 5 months | A second wind; teaching, sharing what you know, a mid-life change of course |
| 5th | about 59 years 4 months | Arrives with the second Saturn return: what to keep, what to build on, the next chapter |
| 6th | about 71 years 2 months | Wisdom, mentoring, family, faith |
| 7th | about 83 years | Looking back over the whole arc; legacy |
The exact age shifts by a few months from person to person, because Jupiter speeds up and slows down along its path and turns retrograde for about four months every year.
How to find your Jupiter return
- Find your natal Jupiter. Its sign and degree are in your birth chart (for example, Jupiter at 14° Leo). Your birth time doesn't matter much for this: Jupiter moves only about a twelfth of a degree a day, so the date alone puts it within a fraction of a degree. You need the time only for its house.
- Add about 11 years 10 months to your birth date for the first return, and the same again for each one after.
- Look up when Jupiter crosses your degree around that date in an ephemeris or a transit chart. That's the exact return.
- Check for retrograde. If Jupiter turns retrograde near your degree, it crosses it three times over several months: forward, back, then forward again.
Many astrologers, especially those who use whole sign houses, treat the whole time Jupiter spends in your Jupiter sign (about a year) as the return, with the exact-degree day as its peak.
When Jupiter is in each sign, 2021–2032
If your natal Jupiter is in the sign in the left column, this is when you have your return in this cycle:
| Your Jupiter sign | Jupiter there |
|---|---|
| Aquarius | Dec 19, 2020 – May 13, 2021; Jul 28 – Dec 29, 2021 |
| Pisces | May 13 – Jul 28, 2021; Dec 29, 2021 – May 11, 2022; Oct 28 – Dec 20, 2022 |
| Aries | May 11 – Oct 28, 2022; Dec 20, 2022 – May 16, 2023 |
| Taurus | May 16, 2023 – May 26, 2024 |
| Gemini | May 26, 2024 – Jun 9, 2025 |
| Cancer | Jun 9, 2025 – Jun 30, 2026 |
| Leo | Jun 30, 2026 – Jul 26, 2027 |
| Virgo | Jul 26, 2027 – Aug 24, 2028 |
| Libra | Aug 24, 2028 – Sep 24, 2029 |
| Scorpio | Sep 24, 2029 – Oct 23, 2030 |
| Sagittarius | Oct 23, 2030 – Nov 15, 2031 |
| Capricorn | Nov 15, 2031 – Apr 12, 2032; Jun 26 – Nov 30, 2032 |
Who has a Jupiter return in 2026, 2027 and 2028
Jupiter is in Leo until July 26, 2027, then in Virgo until August 24, 2028. You're having your return now or next if you were born in one of these windows (dates when Jupiter was in that sign):
| Return age | Jupiter in Leo (return Jul 2026 – Jul 2027) | Jupiter in Virgo (return Jul 2027 – Aug 2028) |
|---|---|---|
| 12 | Jul 16, 2014 – Aug 11, 2015 | Aug 11, 2015 – Sep 9, 2016 |
| 24 | Aug 1, 2002 – Aug 27, 2003 | Aug 27, 2003 – Sep 25, 2004 |
| 36 | Aug 18, 1990 – Sep 12, 1991 | Sep 12, 1991 – Oct 10, 1992 |
| 48 | Sep 5, 1978 – Mar 1, 1979; Apr 20 – Sep 29, 1979 | Sep 29, 1979 – Oct 27, 1980 |
| 60 | Sep 27, 1966 – Jan 16, 1967; May 23 – Oct 19, 1967; Feb 27 – Jun 15, 1968 | Oct 19, 1967 – Feb 27, 1968; Jun 15 – Nov 15, 1968 |
| 71 | Jun 13 – Nov 17, 1955; Jan 18 – Jul 7, 1956 | Nov 17, 1955 – Jan 18, 1956; Jul 7 – Dec 13, 1956; Feb 19 – Aug 7, 1957 |
Born on a date where the sign changes? Check your chart: the degree decides it. Jupiter turns retrograde at 27° Leo on December 13, 2026 and direct at 16° Leo on April 13, 2027, so anyone with natal Jupiter between 16° and 27° Leo gets three exact hits: once in 2026, once in early 2027 while Jupiter moves backward, and once more after it turns direct.

What a Jupiter return feels like
Astrologers describe the year in a few common themes. Not every return brings all of them; your house and the aspects to Jupiter decide which come forward.
- Opportunity. An offer, a promotion, a place on a course, an introduction that leads somewhere.
- Bigger horizons. Travel, a move, study, a new field, a new faith or philosophy.
- Confidence. Feeling ready to ask for more, or to say yes to something you'd have doubted.
- A new twelve-year plan. What you start now is read as setting the tone until the next return.
- Excess. The flip side: overspending, overeating, overpromising, saying yes to everything.
Because Jupiter enlarges, it can also enlarge a problem you've been ignoring until it can't be ignored. Many astrologers say the return works best when you choose one or two things to grow, not ten.
Your Jupiter return by house
The house your natal Jupiter sits in names the area of life the return grows. You need your birth time for this.
| Natal Jupiter in the | The return tends to grow |
|---|---|
| 1st house | You: confidence, health, a fresh start, how you show up |
| 2nd house | Income, savings, skills you're paid for, self-worth |
| 3rd house | Writing, speaking, learning, siblings, your neighbourhood |
| 4th house | Home, family, a move, a bigger place, roots |
| 5th house | Romance, children, creative work, joy |
| 6th house | Daily work, routines, health habits, a better job |
| 7th house | Partnership, marriage, a business partner, contracts |
| 8th house | Shared money, investments, inheritance, intimacy, deep change |
| 9th house | Travel, higher study, publishing, faith (Jupiter's own house) |
| 10th house | Career, reputation, public role |
| 11th house | Friends, community, networks, hopes for the future |
| 12th house | Rest, retreat, spiritual life, healing, behind-the-scenes work |
Then read the sign. Jupiter in Leo grows through creativity, visibility and generosity; in Virgo, through skill, service and getting the details right; in Sagittarius or Pisces (its home signs), easily and widely; in Gemini or Virgo (its "detriment"), through many small steps rather than one leap; in Capricorn (its "fall"), slowly and through effort.
Reading the return chart
Some astrologers cast a chart for the exact moment of the return, the way a solar return chart is cast for your birthday. They read its rising sign as the tone of the next twelve years, the house Jupiter lands in for the place you live then, and any planet close to Jupiter at that moment. If Jupiter hits your degree three times, they usually use the first hit, or compare all three.
Jupiter return, Saturn return and profections
The Jupiter return lines up with two other cycles in ways worth knowing:
- Profection years. In annual profections, ages 12, 24, 36, 48, 60 and 72 are all 1st-house years: the year your rising sign is "activated". A Jupiter return and a 1st-house profection year nearly always overlap, which is one reason those ages are read as fresh starts.
- The Saturn return. Two Saturn cycles (58.9 years) and five Jupiter cycles (59.3 years) nearly match, so the second Saturn return and the fifth Jupiter return arrive together around 59. Astrologers read that age as a big review: what to keep, what to let go, what to build next. The first Saturn return, at 27 to 30, comes a few years after the second Jupiter return.
- The nodes. The lunar nodes return every 18.6 years, so they don't line up with Jupiter's ages; see the North Node guide for theirs.
What to do during your Jupiter return
- Pick one or two things to grow. Name them before the return starts.
- Say yes to the right invitations. Courses, trips, introductions, the bigger version of a role.
- Look back twelve years. What did you start last time Jupiter was here? What grew? It often shows the pattern of this one.
- Watch the excess. Set a limit on spending and commitments before the year starts.
- Share. Teaching, giving and mentoring are classic Jupiter; many people find the return feels best when the growth is shared.
None of this replaces practical advice. For money, health or legal decisions during a Jupiter year, talk to a financial adviser, doctor or lawyer; astrology is a way of reflecting on timing, not a forecast you can bank on.
Mistakes people make with the Jupiter return
- Expecting a lottery win. Jupiter is read as opportunity, not a payout. It still asks you to act.
- Using a flat age of 12. At 11.86 years a cycle, the 6th return is about ten months before your 72nd birthday.
- Ignoring retrograde. If Jupiter stations near your degree, the return spreads over many months.
- Reading the sign but not the house. The house says where in your life it lands.
- Confusing it with Jupiter in your 1st house. That's a different transit, about your rising sign; the return is about your natal Jupiter, wherever it is.
Questions
What age is the Jupiter return?
About 11 years 10 months, then roughly every 11.86 years: about 24, 36, 47, 59, 71 and 83.
How long does a Jupiter return last?
The exact hit lasts days to a few weeks (or three hits over several months with retrograde). Jupiter stays in your Jupiter sign for about a year, which many astrologers treat as the return year.
Is a Jupiter return always lucky?
It's read as one of the more helpful transits, but it enlarges what's there. Hard aspects to your natal Jupiter, or a difficult house, can make it a year of overreach that needs care.
What is the Jupiter return in Leo?
The return for people born with Jupiter in Leo (born roughly mid-2014 to mid-2015, 2002–03, 1990–91, 1978–79), happening between June 30, 2026 and July 26, 2027. It's read as growth through creative work, visibility, children, romance and joy.
Can I have a Jupiter return without knowing my birth time?
Yes. Your birth date puts Jupiter within a fraction of a degree, so the date of your return is clear. You need the time only for its house; see what you can find without a birth time.
What's the difference between a Jupiter return and a Saturn return?
Jupiter returns every 12 years and is read as growth and opening; Saturn returns every 29.5 years and is read as structure, testing and maturity.
