Synastry without a birth time: what you can still read

Yes, you can read synastry without a birth time. The planet-to-planet contacts between two charts (Venus to Mars, Sun to Moon, Saturn to Venus) depend on the birth date, not the hour, so most of a compatibility reading still works. What you lose is the houses: no Ascendant, no Descendant, and no seeing which part of your life a partner's planets land in.

The one planet to watch is the Moon. It moves fast enough that its sign and its contacts can change during the day, so an untimed Moon needs a quick check before you trust it. Below: what stays and what goes, how far each planet moves in a day, how to check the Moon, what changes when only one of you knows your time, how to narrow a rough time, and how to read the chart step by step. To start with your own side, our free chart takes an exact time, a rough time of day, or none at all.

What works and what you lose

Part of synastryWithout a birth timeWhy
Sun, Mercury, Venus, Mars signsReliable on almost every dateThey move 2 degrees a day or less, so they rarely change sign within a day
Jupiter to Pluto signsReliableThey move a fraction of a degree a day
Planet-to-planet aspectsReliable, except contacts right at the edge of the orbPositions shift by at most 1–2 degrees across the day
Moon signUsually knowable, uncertain on some datesThe Moon moves 12–15 degrees a day and changes sign about every 2.5 days
Moon aspectsOnly the wide, safe onesThe Moon's position can be off by up to about 7 degrees either way
Ascendant, Descendant, MidheavenLostThe Ascendant moves through all 12 signs in a day
House overlaysLost for the untimed person's housesHouses come from the exact time
Composite chart housesLostBuilt from both Ascendants and Midheavens

So you keep the core of what astrologers read first in synastry. The synastry interpretation guide starts with the Sun, Moon, Venus and Mars contacts for this reason: they carry most of the weight, and most of them don't need the time.

How far each planet moves in a day

This is the table that tells you what to trust. Take the most a planet can move in a day, halve it, and that's how far off it can be from a noon chart.

PlanetMovement in one dayMost it can be off from a noon chartTrust it untimed?
MoonAbout 12°–15°About 6°–7.5°Check first
MercuryUp to about 2°About 1°Yes
VenusUp to about 1.25°Under 1°Yes
SunAbout 1°About 0.5°Yes
MarsUp to about 0.8°Under 0.5°Yes
Jupiter, SaturnUnder 0.25°TinyYes
Uranus, Neptune, PlutoUnder 0.1°TinyYes
AscendantAll 360°AnythingNo

These are approximate rates from the planets' orbits; speeds vary, and a planet near a station (turning retrograde or direct) moves even less. The point stands: the Moon and the Ascendant are the only parts that really move within a day.

How to check an untimed Moon

  1. Make two charts for the birth date: one at 12:00 am and one at 11:59 pm, in the birth place.
  2. Compare the Moon sign. Same sign in both? Then the Moon sign is certain. Different? The person's Moon is one of the two signs, and you'll need a rough time to choose.
  3. Note the range. Write down the Moon's degree in both charts. The real Moon is somewhere between them.
  4. Test each Moon contact against the whole range. If the other person's Venus is at 10° Libra and the untimed Moon runs from 2° to 15° Libra, the conjunction holds wherever the Moon was. If the range runs from 20° Libra to 3° Scorpio, it doesn't.

The same check answers "which sign is my Moon?" when you only know your birth date. For why sites sometimes disagree, see why is my Moon sign different.

When one of you knows your time and one doesn't

This is the most common case, and it's better than it sounds. House overlays work in two directions:

So with one timed chart you keep about half of the house work, plus all the aspects. With neither timed, you keep the aspects only.

Narrowing a rough birth time

"Morning", "after lunch" or "late at night" is useful. A six-hour window instead of 24 cuts the Moon's possible range to about a quarter, and on many dates that settles the Moon sign and most Moon aspects.

What you knowWindowMoon range (about)What it can settle
Date only24 hours12°–15°Most planet signs and aspects
Morning / afternoon / evening / nightAbout 6 hours3°–4°The Moon sign on most dates; most Moon aspects
To the nearest hour1 hourAbout 0.5°The Moon, and a likely rising sign
To the nearest 15 minutes15 minutesTinyThe Ascendant and houses, mostly

A rough time still isn't enough for houses. The Ascendant changes sign about every two hours on average, so even "around 3 pm" leaves two or three possible rising signs. The rising sign without a birth time guide shows how to narrow it further.

Noon chart or sunrise chart?

When there's no time at all, you have to put something in the time box. Two habits are common:

For synastry, use noon for the planets and skip houses for the untimed person. Don't read the Ascendant a noon chart gives you; it's just the sign that was rising at 12:00.

How to read synastry without a birth time, step by step

  1. Set up both charts at noon (or the real time where you have it) in the right birth places.
  2. Check the untimed Moon with the midnight-to-midnight test above.
  3. Read the Sun–Moon contacts. One person's Sun conjunct, trine or opposite the other's Moon is a classic sign of ease. Keep only the Moon contacts that hold over the whole range.
  4. Read Venus and Mars. Venus–Mars, Venus–Venus and Mars–Mars contacts describe attraction and how you handle desire and conflict. See synastry aspects that indicate attraction.
  5. Read Saturn. Saturn on someone's Sun, Moon or Venus shows commitment and weight, sometimes pressure. This works fine untimed. The marriage aspects guide covers the long-term contacts.
  6. Read the hard outer-planet contacts (Pluto, Uranus, Neptune to personal planets). See synastry aspects to avoid.
  7. If one chart is timed, place the untimed person's planets in the timed person's houses and read those overlays.
  8. Sum it up from what you can trust. Write "unknown" next to anything that depends on the missing time instead of guessing.

Which contacts to trust, and which to drop

Where to find a real birth time

Outside the US, rules differ: some countries record the time on every certificate, others never do.

A worked example

An example pair: Sam knows their birth time; Jo only knows their birth date.

  1. Jo's Moon runs from 4° to 17° Taurus over the day. Same sign all day, so Jo's Moon in Taurus is certain.
  2. Sam's Sun is at 12° Taurus. Jo's Moon is within 8 degrees of it across the whole range, so the Sun–Moon conjunction holds. That's a strong, trustworthy contact.
  3. Jo's Venus is at 20° Cancer and Sam's Mars at 22° Scorpio: a trine 2 degrees from exact. Safe.
  4. Jo's Saturn sits at 10° Leo, square Sam's Sun at 12° Taurus. Also safe.
  5. Sam's 7th house runs from 15° Cancer to 13° Leo, so Jo's Venus at 20° Cancer falls in Sam's 7th: a partner's Venus in the partnership house. That overlay works because Sam is timed.
  6. Where Sam's planets fall in Jo's houses, and whether anything touches Jo's Ascendant: unknown.

Even untimed, that's a full read: emotional ease (Sun–Moon), easy attraction (Venus–Mars trine), a serious, testing edge (Saturn square Sun), and a partner who feels like a partner (Venus in the 7th).

Mistakes to avoid

Questions

Is synastry accurate without a birth time?

The planet-to-planet part is, because it depends on the date. You lose the houses and the Ascendant, and the Moon needs checking. Most of what astrologers read first in synastry is still there.

What time should I use if I don't know my birth time?

Use 12:00 pm. It keeps the Moon within about 6–7.5 degrees of its real place. Then ignore the Ascendant and houses the chart shows.

Can I do a compatibility chart if my partner doesn't know their time?

Yes. Use your real time and their noon chart. Their planets in your houses still work; your planets in their houses don't.

Does the Moon sign change during the day?

On some days, yes. The Moon changes sign about every two and a half days, so on roughly two days in five it changes sign at some point in the day. Make a midnight chart and an 11:59 pm chart to see.

Can I find my birth time from synastry with someone?

Not reliably. Rectification works from dated life events (moves, marriages, accidents), not from one relationship. See rising sign without a birth time for how it's done.
