North Node meaning: what your North and South Node say
The North Node in astrology is a point in your birth chart that shows the direction you're meant to grow in: the habits, skills and parts of life that feel unfamiliar but pay off when you lean into them. Its opposite, the South Node, shows what comes easily and what you tend to fall back on.
The two always sit exactly opposite each other, so they're read as one line through the chart, from comfort (South) to growth (North). Below: what the nodes actually are, how to find yours (a date table is further down), what each sign and house pair means, when the nodes come back round in your life, and the mistakes that throw people off. To see the exact sign, degree and house of yours, get your free chart; your sign alone you can read from the table below.
What the North Node is
The North Node isn't a planet. It's a point in space. The Moon's path around the Earth is tilted about 5° from the Sun's yearly path across our sky (the ecliptic), so the two paths cross at two places:
- The North Node (also called the ascending node, or the dragon's head) is where the Moon crosses the ecliptic heading north.
- The South Node (the descending node, or dragon's tail) is where it crosses heading south, exactly opposite.
These crossing points slowly slide backwards through the zodiac, completing a full circle in about 18.6 years. That means the nodes spend roughly 18 to 19 months in each sign, and everyone born in the same year and a half shares a North Node sign.
The nodes matter to astronomers too: eclipses can only happen when a New or Full Moon falls near them. That's why astrologers link eclipse seasons to the nodes and pay extra attention when an eclipse lands near your natal North or South Node.
The symbols: the North Node is ☊ (a horseshoe opening down) and the South Node is ☋ (opening up). Many charts show only the North Node; the South Node is always the same degree in the opposite sign.
North Node vs South Node
| South Node ☋ | North Node ☊ | |
|---|---|---|
| What it shows | What you already know how to do | What you're learning to do |
| How it feels | Easy, familiar, a bit stale | Awkward, exciting, a stretch |
| Under stress | Where you retreat | Where you avoid going |
| Modern reading | Past patterns, inborn talents, "past lives" for some astrologers | Purpose, direction, what brings growth |
| Traditional reading | Takes away, lessens what it touches | Adds to, increases what it touches |
The goal isn't to drop the South Node. Its skills are real and useful. The usual advice is to bring them along as you head north, rather than living only in them.
How to find your North Node
The sign of your North Node depends only on your birth date, unless you were born near a change. The house it falls in depends on your birth time and place. Three ways to find it:
- Use the date table below. Find your birth date's period. If you were born within a week of a change, check a chart, since tables are approximate at the edges.
- Read it off a chart. Look for ☊ or "Node" or "NN" in the list of placements. Some charts show both "True Node" and "Mean Node"; see the section on that below.
- Get the house as well. You need an exact birth time for this. Our free chart lists the node with its sign, degree and house.

What your North Node sign means
Because the nodes always sit in opposite signs, there are only six axes. Find yours by your North Node sign; the South Node is the other half of the same row.
| North Node in | Growing toward | South Node in | Falling back on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Acting on your own wants, taking the lead, being brave alone | Libra | Keeping the peace, putting partners first, waiting for agreement |
| Libra | Teamwork, give and take, considering the other person | Aries | Going it alone, acting fast, "my way" |
| Taurus | Simplicity, steady effort, enjoying what you have | Scorpio | Crisis, intensity, other people's drama and resources |
| Scorpio | Depth, sharing power, letting change happen | Taurus | Comfort, holding on, owning things for security |
| Gemini | Listening, asking questions, staying curious | Sagittarius | Having the answer, preaching, the big picture only |
| Sagittarius | Trusting your own beliefs, seeing the big picture | Gemini | Gathering more facts, second-guessing, chatter |
| Cancer | Home, feelings, letting people care for you | Capricorn | Work, status, being in control and needing no one |
| Capricorn | Responsibility, goals, standing on your own | Cancer | Family needs first, moods, the safety of home |
| Leo | Being seen, creating, taking the centre for once | Aquarius | Blending into the group, staying detached |
| Aquarius | The group, shared causes, friendship over applause | Leo | Needing approval, the spotlight, personal drama |
| Virgo | Routine, practical help, taking care of the body | Pisces | Escaping, drifting, rescuing others |
| Pisces | Trust, faith, letting go of control | Virgo | Worrying, fixing, criticising, over-planning |
Read these as directions, not verdicts. A North Node in Aries doesn't mean you should stop caring about partners; it means your growth comes from also learning to want something for yourself and say so.
What your North Node house means
If you know your birth time, the house adds the "where": the area of life where the growth shows up. The houses come in six opposite pairs, just like the signs. (New to houses? Start with what the 12 houses mean.)
| North Node house | Growth comes through | South Node house |
|---|---|---|
| 1st | Your own identity, choices and body | 7th: relationships, other people's needs |
| 7th | Partnership, commitment, compromise | 1st: independence, self-reliance |
| 2nd | Your own money, values, self-worth | 8th: shared money, other people's resources, crisis |
| 8th | Deep bonds, sharing, letting go | 2nd: owning, holding on, self-sufficiency |
| 3rd | Daily talk, learning, siblings and neighbours | 9th: big beliefs, travel, being the expert |
| 9th | Study, travel, faith, wider views | 3rd: local life, details, endless information |
| 4th | Home, family, inner life | 10th: career, public role, achievement |
| 10th | Career, public role, ambition | 4th: home, family, private life |
| 5th | Creativity, play, romance, joy | 11th: groups, friends, causes |
| 11th | Community, friendships, long-term hopes | 5th: personal spotlight, private passions |
| 6th | Daily routine, work habits, health care | 12th: retreat, solitude, the unseen |
| 12th | Rest, reflection, spiritual life | 6th: busyness, service, staying in control |
When sign and house agree (a Capricorn North Node in the 10th), the theme is loud and clear. When they differ (a Cancer North Node in the 10th), the reading blends them: here, growth through a career that cares for people.
True Node vs Mean Node
Charts may show two North Nodes. They're two ways of working out the same point:
- Mean Node: the node's average position. It always moves backwards at a steady pace.
- True Node: the node's actual position at that moment. It wobbles, mostly backwards, now and then standing still or moving forward for a short while.
The two are usually within about a degree and a half of each other, so they almost always fall in the same sign. They can disagree if yours sits near 0° or 29°. Most modern Western charts default to the True Node; some astrologers prefer the Mean. Pick one and stick with it, and if the two land in different signs for you, read both.
When the nodes come back round: returns and reversals
Because the nodes circle the zodiac in about 18.6 years, they come back to where they were at your birth at fairly fixed ages. Astrologers read these as times when the North Node's themes come up again. For a timing tool that changes every birthday, see profection year meaning.
| Event | Ages (about) | How it's read |
|---|---|---|
| Nodal return (the nodes back where they started) | 18–19, 37, 55–56, 74 | A new chapter on your path; old patterns show up so you can choose again |
| Nodal reversal (the nodes swapped: North on your South) | 9, 28, 46–47, 65 | A pull back to the familiar; a time to notice what you rely on too much |
The reversal at about 28 falls close to the first Saturn return. That's partly why the late twenties are read as a turning point in astrology.
The nodes also move through your chart now. When the transiting North Node crosses your Sun, Moon or rising sign, or an eclipse lands near one of them, astrologers watch that area of life for the next six months or so.
The nodes in Vedic astrology: Rahu and Ketu
Vedic (Indian) astrology calls the North Node Rahu and the South Node Ketu and treats them as shadow planets with strong effects. Rahu is read as hunger, ambition and what you chase; Ketu as detachment, past skill and letting go. Vedic charts use the sidereal zodiac, which sits about 24° from the Western one today, so your Rahu sign is often one sign earlier than your Western North Node sign. Don't mix the two systems in one reading.
A worked example
Someone born in May 1983 has the North Node in Gemini and the South Node in Sagittarius (from the table above). Say their chart puts the North Node in the 7th house and the South Node in the 1st.
- South Node in Sagittarius, 1st house: at ease being independent, opinionated, the one with the big answer.
- North Node in Gemini, 7th house: growth comes through partners and real conversation: asking more than telling, staying curious about the other person's view.
- Timing: their nodal returns fall around 2001–2002 and 2020–2021, when the nodes were back in Gemini–Sagittarius; their reversal around 2011–2012, when the North Node was in Sagittarius.
The reading is one sentence: "Bring your conviction into your relationships, and let other people change your mind sometimes."
Mistakes people make with the North Node
- Reading it as fate. It's a direction to lean, not a promise of what will happen. Astrology is a way to reflect, not a forecast you can bank on.
- Treating the South Node as bad. Its skills are real. The point is not to hide in them.
- Reading the sign without the house. Everyone born in the same 18 months shares your sign; the house is what makes it yours, and it needs a birth time.
- Ignoring a near-edge degree. At 0° or 29°, check both True and Mean Node and read both signs.
- Mixing Western and Vedic. A Western North Node in Taurus may be Rahu in Aries. Neither is wrong; they're different systems.
- Reading the nodes before the basics. Start with your Sun, Moon and rising sign; the nodes add direction to a chart you already know.
Questions
Is the North Node your life purpose?
Many modern astrologers describe it that way. A more careful reading is "the direction that helps you grow." It's one point in the chart, and it's read alongside the rest, especially the Sun and the planet that rules the North Node's sign.
Do I need my birth time to find my North Node?
Not for the sign, unless you were born within about a week of a change in the table above. You do need it for the house.
What does it mean if a planet sits on my North Node?
A planet within a few degrees of the North Node is read as a tool for your growth, and one on the South Node as a strong old habit or talent. A planet on the nodes makes that planet stand out in the whole chart.
What is the North Node in synastry?
When one person's planet sits on the other's North Node, astrologers read it as someone who helps you grow; on the South Node, someone who feels deeply familiar. See how to read two charts together.
Is the North Node retrograde?
Almost always. The Mean Node always moves backwards, and the True Node moves backwards most of the time. That's normal and isn't read the way a planet's retrograde is.
Where is the North Node now?
From January 11, 2025 to July 25, 2026 it was in Pisces. It moved into Aquarius on July 26, 2026 and stays there until March 25, 2028, when it enters Capricorn.
