Moon sign meaning: what your Moon sign says about you
Your Moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon was in at the moment you were born. In astrology it describes your emotional side: what you need to feel safe, how you react before you think, and how you look after yourself and the people close to you. Your Sun sign is who you are aiming to be; your Moon sign is how you feel on the way.
The Moon moves fast, so your Moon sign is not the same as your Sun sign for most people, and it needs your birth date and, often, your birth time. If you have them, you can find your Moon sign free with your Sun and rising sign in about two minutes. Below is what the Moon sign covers, how to check it, why two websites can give you different answers, and all twelve Moon signs in one table.
What is a Moon sign?
Seen from Earth, the Moon travels through all twelve zodiac signs in about 27.3 days, the length of its orbit measured against the stars. That works out to roughly two and a half days in each sign. Whichever sign it was passing through when you were born is your Moon sign.
Because the Moon moves so much faster than the Sun, people born in the same month usually share a Sun sign but not a Moon sign. Someone born on the 3rd and someone born on the 6th of the same month will almost always have different Moons. That is one reason Moon signs feel more personal than Sun signs: fewer people share yours with you at any time.
In a birth chart the Moon is drawn as a crescent, ☽. It sits in a sign (the style of your feelings) and in a house (the part of life where those feelings play out most). The sign is what people mean when they say "my Moon is in Scorpio".
What does your Moon sign say about you?
Astrologers read the Moon in a handful of areas. None of them is about how you look to strangers; that is the job of the rising sign. The Moon is about the private side, the one people see after they know you.
- Emotional needs. What has to be true for you to feel okay: space, closeness, order, change, praise, quiet. When those needs go unmet for a while, the Moon sign describes how you get restless or low.
- First reactions. The reflex before the thought. A Fire Moon tends to react fast and out loud; an Earth Moon goes quiet and practical; an Air Moon wants to talk it through; a Water Moon feels it fully before saying anything.
- Comfort and habits. The food, rooms, routines and people you go back to when you are tired. Many people recognise their Moon sign in how they spend a free Sunday.
- How you care for others. The way you show care: doing things, saying things, giving space, staying close. Two partners with different Moons can both be caring and still miss each other's signals.
- Home and family. Traditionally the Moon also stands for the mother or main carer, early home life and memories. Astrologers read it as the kind of home you grew up wanting, or the one you build now.
- Body rhythm. Sleep, appetite and moods that come and go. Traditional astrology tied the Moon to the body's cycles; read this loosely, and see a doctor for anything that worries you about sleep, mood or eating.
A short way to keep it straight: the Sun is the hero of the story, the Moon is how the hero feels at night, and the rising sign is the first page.
How to find your Moon sign
You need three things, in order of importance:
- Your birth date. This alone narrows the Moon to one or two signs.
- Your birth time. The Moon moves about 13 degrees a day, a little over half a degree an hour. Each sign spans 30 degrees, so on most days the time doesn't change the sign. On the day the Moon changes sign, it does: born in the morning, you may have one Moon; born in the evening, the next.
- Your birth place. The place sets the time zone. A chart that uses the wrong zone, or misses daylight saving time, can shift the Moon by an hour or more, which matters when it is near the edge of a sign.
Your birth time is usually on the long-form birth certificate. In the US you can order one from the vital records office of the state you were born in; the CDC keeps a list of every state's office with fees and addresses.
No birth time? You may still know your Moon sign
Work out the Moon's position at noon on your birth date. Over a full day the Moon moves about 12 to 15 degrees, so it can be at most about 7 or 8 degrees away from that noon position at either end of the day.
| Moon at noon on your birth date | What it means |
|---|---|
| Between 8° and 22° of a sign | Your Moon sign is that sign, whatever time you were born. |
| Under 8° of a sign | If you were born early in the morning, the Moon may still have been in the sign before. Read both. |
| Over 22° of a sign | If you were born late in the evening, the Moon may already have moved into the next sign. Read both. |
When two signs are possible, read both descriptions. Most people recognise one quickly, especially in how they react under stress. A known time settles it.
Why do websites give me different Moon signs?
This is one of the most searched questions about Moon signs, and there are four usual reasons (each one in depth in why your Moon sign is different on different sites):
- Tropical or sidereal zodiac. Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which starts Aries at the spring equinox. Vedic (Indian) astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, tied to the stars. The two are now about 24 degrees apart. So a Moon at 10° Leo in a Western chart is around 16° Cancer in a Vedic one. If your Moon is in the first 24 degrees of a sign in a Western chart, a Vedic site will usually give you the sign before. Neither site is broken; they measure from different starting points. Moon Says uses the tropical zodiac.
- No birth time. Some calculators quietly use noon or midnight when you leave the time blank. If the Moon changed sign that day, two sites can disagree.
- Time zone or daylight saving. An hour's error moves the Moon only about half a degree, but that is enough at a sign's edge. Older records, war time and places that changed their clocks are the usual culprits.
- Typing slips. AM and PM swapped, or a 24-hour time read as 12-hour. Check what the calculator shows back to you.

Moon signs by element
A quick way into any Moon sign is its element. The four elements describe the broad style of feeling; the sign adds detail.
| Element | Moon signs | Style of feeling | Gets along easily with |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fire | Aries, Leo, Sagittarius | Quick, open, needs action and enthusiasm | Fire and Air Moons |
| Earth | Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn | Steady, practical, shows care by doing | Earth and Water Moons |
| Air | Gemini, Libra, Aquarius | Thinks feelings through, needs to talk | Air and Fire Moons |
| Water | Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces | Deep, intuitive, needs closeness | Water and Earth Moons |
"Gets along easily" is not "only works with". Astrologers read two people's Moons as how easily they comfort each other. Different elements just have to learn the other's language: a Water Moon wants you to stay; an Air Moon wants you to talk; both are asking for care.
Where the Moon is strong or weak
Traditional astrology says the Moon is more at home in some signs than others. These are old labels, not grades of a person, but you will see them in readings:
- Cancer is the Moon's own sign (its "domicile"). The Moon's needs and the sign's style match: home, care, memory.
- Taurus is its "exaltation". The Moon is read as calm and steady here.
- Capricorn is its "detriment", opposite Cancer. Feelings get handled like work: real, but kept under control.
- Scorpio is its "fall", opposite Taurus. Feelings run deep and private, and trust takes time.
A Moon in Capricorn or Scorpio is not a bad Moon. It means the person's emotional style doesn't match the Moon's soft, open nature, so they often take longer to show what they feel.
Your Moon's house and phase
Two more details shape how the Moon sign shows, and both come from the full chart:
The house
The house shows the area of life where your feelings are most on show. A Moon in the 4th house is read as home-centred; in the 10th, it puts feelings into career and public life; in the 7th, into partners; in the 12th, into a private inner world. Houses need your birth time, because they turn with the rising sign. Our rising sign guide explains why. All twelve are in Moon in houses, with how to find yours.
The phase
The Moon's phase at your birth is the angle between the Sun and the Moon. Born near a new Moon, your Sun and Moon are in the same or neighbouring signs; born near a full Moon, they sit in opposite signs. Astrologers read new-Moon births as single-minded and full-Moon births as pulled between two sides that want different things. The whole cycle takes about 29.5 days.
Aspects
Planets that sit at set angles to your Moon colour it too. A Moon close to Saturn is often read as serious and self-reliant; close to Venus, as warm and easygoing; close to Mars, as quick to anger and quick to act. Our step-by-step guide on how to read a birth chart covers aspects and the order to read them in.
Moon sign vs Sun sign
Most people know their Sun sign from horoscope columns and find their Moon sign later. The two often feel different, and that is expected: the Sun describes your will and direction, the Moon your needs and moods. If your Sun sign never quite fit, your Moon sign may describe the part of you that people close to you see. We compare the two in detail, with what each combination of elements means, in Moon sign vs Sun sign: what's the difference.
How to use your Moon sign
- Name what you need. Read your Moon row and ask if it fits how you recharge. If it does, plan for it: a Taurus Moon books the quiet evening; a Gemini Moon calls a friend.
- Notice your stress pattern. The "under stress" column is often the most recognisable. Spotting it early is useful whether or not you believe in astrology.
- Learn the Moon of the people you live with. A partner with a Fire Moon may want to talk now; one with an Earth Moon may want to fix the problem first. Neither is wrong.
- Read it with the rest of the chart. The Moon is one placement out of ten planets, twelve houses and their angles. A reading starts with the Sun, Moon and rising sign, then adds the rest.
Common mistakes with Moon signs
- Using a calculator without a time and not checking the edge. If the Moon changed sign that day, you may be reading the wrong one.
- Mixing zodiacs. Comparing a Vedic Moon with a Western Sun gives a mismatched pair. Use one system for the whole chart.
- Treating it as a verdict. A Moon sign describes a style, not a limit. A Scorpio Moon can learn to trust; an Aries Moon can learn to wait.
- Reading only the sign. The house, phase and close aspects can change how the same Moon sign shows from one person to the next.
Questions people ask
What is my Moon sign by date of birth?
Look up where the Moon was on your birth date. On a little over half of all days the Moon stays in one sign from midnight to midnight, and your date alone gives the answer. On the rest it changes sign at some hour, and, you need your birth time (or the noon check above) to know which one is yours.
Is the Moon sign more important than the Sun sign?
In Western astrology the Sun usually comes first and the Moon is read alongside it. In Vedic astrology the Moon sign (rashi) is the main sign people go by. Both systems read them together.
How often does the Moon change signs?
About every two and a half days. It goes through all twelve signs in about 27.3 days.
Can my Moon sign be the same as my Sun sign?
Yes. It happens to people born around a new Moon, roughly one person in twelve. Astrologers read it as a person whose wants and needs point the same way.
Does my Moon sign change as I get older?
Your birth Moon never changes. Some astrologers also follow a "progressed" Moon, which moves through a sign in about two and a half years and is read as your changing emotional focus over life.
Which Moon sign is the most emotional?
Astrologers usually name the Water Moons, Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces, as the most openly feeling. Every Moon feels as much; the others show it in actions, words or ideas.
